Out on DVD and Bluray on Monday, for anyone who has not seen it, it's a must for any true petrolhead.

You need to listen to it loud and on a big screen to get the full effect.

You will well up, I guarantee it, very well directed.

I'm going to be unpopular here and say I found it disappointing.

Yes, it gets the gritty '70s atmosphere spot on, the actors are very convincing in their respective roles, the psychological battle between them is well done, but the racing sequences - which surely must be the raison d'être of a racing movie - are pants. They look like they were filmed at 30 mph and they thought they'd make up the difference with jerky camerawork and a loud soundtrack.

Watch the actual races on Youtube - much more exciting.

I'd also say it actually sells Hunt short. For example it shows him grovelling to join McLaren when the truth is much more cool. McLaren suddenly lost their driver and cool as a cucumber Hunt rang Teddy Mayer and said "well, it looks like I'm driving for you this year'. That's how he got the drive. What a legend.

I found the Beeb's 'Lauda versus Hunt' a much better effort.

Still, if you can but aside the awful race sequences then as a movie it is a good effort.

The racing sequences for me where a minor part of the movie.
For a disappointing racing movie 'driven' must take the prize!

I finally got to see this on the plane and it was probably fairly edited to get a lower age rating, I thought to was a well made film, most of the close track action was blarney CGI but then the card are 40 years old now so they are not going to be allowed to do close action with the real ones. I would have expected some talk of the 6 wheel Tyrells as they were the most controversial vehicles at the time. 9/10 from me.

During his commentary days, Hunt would continually mention carrying a rag in the car to wipe away oil smears on the visor

Was looking for that nice touch :)

For once a racing film that is more than just racing. I thought it really captured the atmosphere, the rivalry between them and their totally different approaches but it also brought out the similarities in them both, the need to win at all costs.

I see it as biased towards the back story which was good, including Lord Hesketh who lost almost everything at the time being amongst them, the 'dark powers' later referee to by drivers like Senna...

Excellent. Hopefully it'll be on the in-flight entertainmnet next week. And hopefully I won't well up at the end. It's really not cool to get emotional at films on flights, especially when the stewardesses notice.
