I've enjoyed reading all of the opinions on here but your Porsche does look fantastic and for me is a real head turner. And to buy it new must have been a great experience too, enjoy

I really respect my Porsche but can't see me ever loving it. The shut lines are perfect, the trim still fits and looks brand new, the performance is very impressive and reliability has been beyond reproach.
My QP is gorgeous, I go out to the garage and find myself taking pictures of it........after 8 years.....sad or what but that is maser ownership. It is beyond how well a car is made and goes.

Nailed. Again.

Nice one BJL.

I've recently even looked at things like an MX5 and GT86 to go back to old school fun at much lower speeds. Maybe even thinking of building a Caterham or Westfield or similar. I miss the old MK1 MR2 T Bar I had with my sister & GTi-6. Much more character and fun than all these new supercars and BM M-cars. Personally I think we have gone too far and are losing sight of many of the real reasons for us being petrolheads & appreciating the car.

I wonder what the defintion of petrolhead is and should be. Or maybe we need a new word for those of us that don't want to follow the mass market or desires of the majority it seems.

Any suggestions???

Very interesting, as I'm in something of a dilemma at the moment. The Mrs has taken over the Volvo estate which was my daily drive, because its dog friendly - and the hound was starting to damage the interior of her Alfa (she let it all over the seats - 30 mins with a hoover to relieve it of bloody dog hair!). So, I'm driving a Giulietta to work each day which is "fine", but not quite where I want to be. I've therefore been looking for something as a daily drive, that can do 90 miles a day, including the M25, and would get used probably on average 3-4 times a week for this / 15,000 p.a.

Been to BMW and looked at the M4 and have come fairly close to it, but have have backed away. And you know what, its a perfectly decent car, but it just feels like a fast saloon (or coupe). Granted, its well kitted out, well made, nice leather etc...etc... but where's the va va vroom Nicole? It still doesn't feel hugely engaging when I've driven it and if you're spending that kind of money it has to have some kind of connection.

So, without wishing to hijack a thread, any suggestions for a daily drive? Perhaps the trouble is that part of me is thinking i should just buy 5-10k things and accept I'll change them constantly, but then I also figure that if I buy something decent I might actually keep the car for more than 5 mins just for once!

What is it with needing to change cars every 5 mins? I am exactly the same, and part of my thinking of going new was to stop this happening. I changed each 6 months on past form, costing say £6k-£8k a time (all purchases have been "approved used" thus reasonable dealer margins) so over 3 years that's £40k odd. Hence not being too worried about depreciation of a new one, as I'd only be spending money changing all the time anyway otherwise. The serious flaw in this plan is if I change the new one before 3 years, but will cross that bridge if I come to it......

Anyhow......would you find the C63 coupe any more engaging than the M4? Great drivers car, can pick one up that has had all the depreciation taken out of it so if you do change again you won't lose much. Friend of mine had one and it was fast, incredible noise and he found it great fun to drive.....

Plus, I bet there isn't a Porsche forum on the planet which can hold a candle to SM.

Haha, haven't considered a Porsche forum. SM has been great, got some really useful tips and good contacts from here. In fact one of the interested private buyers who I sadly didn't sell my car to is keen to enter the Maserati world (coming across from Porsche ironically, he needs rear seats) and I have suggested he joins up.

Interestingly my good friend who has just sold his 997 Turbo has just bought a MX-5.
It is the current model of the last few years, and he has had a mild tweek to the power (exhaust manifold and re-map), coil over adjustable suspension fitted, and a new set of wheels with track biased rubber.
He loves it, and I must say the suspension and tyres have made a massive difference.
He just found the 997 Turbo too sterile, just put your foot down and wham! all at incredible illegal speeds. He found no pleasure cruising, and that's the difference. With the Maserati you can also cruise, and enjoy the soundtrack....no soundtrack with his Porsche.

I dunno - I can't help myself! I think its a bit of "ooo there's something pretty and shiny - let me have it"! I've made a couple of mistakes along the way too e.g. trading the S60 for a V60 rather than trading the Mrs' Alfa for something dog-friendly. I just couldn't bring myself to adding up the £££'s involved...

Not sure I even want an M4, minus the depreciation. I know I can pick one up for 10k off the list, but its still a decent slab of money on something that doesn't feel hugely engaging. C63 was something I'd thought about having a look at too.

I can see why and understand it. I have seriously thought of something like this. I took the Maser out late afternoon for a 45 min spin. Nobody needs a quicker car than a nice 4200 on the road ;) There is plenty of torque, power, fun and theatre to be had.

Anyone got or had or driven a GT86 or BRZ?

Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

Family member owns a BRZ.

Great car for the money. Acceleration is brisk but hardly neck snapping from the four pot.

Decent enough sound. Steering is very direct and razor accurate.

Able to get the back end out easily enough under power being RWD.

The Alacantara trim option lifts the cabin but otherwise, it's more or less a case of cheap and cheerful.

Audio and plastics sub-par, but hey, this is a cheap car.

Overall, great little driver's car for what it is. Lovely shape as well.

Looks like a great car and can probably do many things incredibly well, but unfortunately it fails my side street test - ie. would I let it out of a side street?

Nah - no chance!

A women I work with has a GT86..Driven it a few times....She let me drive it around Llandow track at the SM track day and it was the most fun I have had in a car around that track. brilliant car and so much fun....You can easily get the back end out and hold it the balance is just perfect.

Agree with Andy a proper little drift car with just the right amount of power for fun. I would rather have the GT than the BRZ.

Remember similar discussions on a Ferrari forum a few years back. People saying the new models were so capable that only at ridiculous speeds did you get the excitement of a 328 at 60mph on a twisty road.
99% of my time I am driving within speed limits and I want something that brings a smile to my face when I open the door and sit in it. Performance is secondary.
I understand people saying they want more power because you can but in truth we don't need it.
MX5, Caterham or a classic sports car would be better fun at legal speeds than risking jail in a supercar. I had a 70's 911 and that was seriously good fun. Still quick enough but you knew the back end could step out (quickly) if you got it wrong. When the handling was "improved" on later models they lost part of their appeal for me.
Saw a 991 in the flesh this morning and it is impressive to look at I must say. No mistaking the lineage.

I've never had an urge for a Porsche but this is a great write up and I may look at them a little differently now:)

I can certainly support the case for a C63 as an everyday car. I bought a new 4 dr in 2012 (facelift - much better 'box and interior) and ran it for 31k miles. The only real issue was the tank, which allowed c250 miles range so needed filling far too regularly! Have run M3/5/6s too and a V8 RS6 but would choose the c63 for fun and noise. You could go for the estate version until your wife decides it is the next dog transport......
