Hi, i am new to this site but have asked for help on another site…was recommended to go to poole but the problem with that is that i am worried about driving down for 2 hours from central london and then having my car breakdown midway! So far 2 accidents have occurred back to back…one -a guy tried to drive away with my car and the whole grill fell off. The case is still in court…Second, someone hit the rear of my parked car and it was in the repair shop for 2 months! After one month I started hearing noises in the rear of my car and also the parking light not going off etc. I have spent way too much money on this car, and also in other transport while the car was being repaired. Is there anything on this list that can be done cheaper at another place? currently its in hr owen london. this is the quote they sent:

Checked for EML warning light, carried out diagnostic test and found fault stored for tank evaporation pump. Requires further investigation as possible faults with carbon canister or evaporation solenoid valve = £187.00 - Checked for noise from rear, found right hand rear handbrake cable detached. Requires new handbrake shoes & refitting cable and then to recheck further as this is only noise heard at time of tests = £626.00 - Checked for alarm going off, carried out diagnostic test and found 7 causes of fault related to ultra-sonic sensors, recommend to replace faulty sensor = £640.00 - Checked for rear light staying on, carried out basic checks and all O.k. Suspect wiring fault, requires further investigation = £187.00 - RH Camcover gasket leaking and dripping, requires replacement = £1024.00

can someone please recommend some place closer to central london who can do all of these?

Please help! Thank you! Nadya

The people in Poole have recommended getting the engine sorted and the parking sensor…i don;t know if its best to do that from hr owen then as they are saying i shouldn't drive the car incase i damage the engine even more.

Nadya08,

Unless they include four new tyres in with the RH cam cover, please do not ever pay someone £1000 plus for a £25 rubber gasket to be replaced.

That's the most insane quote I have ever heard in my life. And I'm a mechanic!!

Just to put things into perspective. I have bought a second hand Nissan micra, serviced all fluids, filters and front discs and pads and driven it (including fuel) over 5000 miles for less than £1000.

They are around £25 on Eurospares for a 4200/GS (not sure what car you have. Even going off £100 p/h it doesn't take ten hrs to change the gasket.

hi gingeh721! yes i know the quote is atrocious but because i have no idea what to do i feel quite overwhelmed…i wouldn't know how to fit anything nor would i know which mechanic to go to which is why i'm here… i was told that i should get my engine fixed from hr owen so that i can then drive my car…i don't know which part of the quote relates to fixing the engine…is it the eml warning light as that was the one flashing for the engine?

Hi Nadya, that's a run of bad luck. I hope your bad times with this car and drawing to a close and you can find somewhere sensible to get it mended properly.

All those quotes look like they're taking the p!ss, but they're probably just standard main dealer quotes for those parts. Tell them to sharpen their pencil and see what they come back with - there's always a better price to be had with main dealers.

If you do decide to take it elsewhere I'm not sure if any of those issues are bad enough to stop you driving that car (maybe the EML light..?), assuming the brakes are fine. And if it does break down you presumably have some kind of breakdown cover to help finish the journey. Someone better versed in these things will probably offer a more considered opinion.

By the way - a slightly leaky cam cover is a given with these. Mine do it. They all do. Unless yours is bad it probably isn't even worth worrying about.
