Rear silencers made of rust?

Cheers! :)

Maserati has been known for many things. Obviously they hold the patent for producing silencers made out of compressed rust. I have never seen such a rusted silencer on a car with less than 40k miles.
One pipe fell off, so I exchanged both with stainless steel Fox exhausts to refurbish the original silencers over the winter.
But they seem rotten beyond repair.
I was surprised that the Fox end pipes were much more Quiet than the oem ones even though they are straight through pipes with just some damping wool around the tubes.
No wonder since almost everything in the stock exhaust was blown outside.
I miss the sound of the oem exhaust even though it was for sure not the sound with which it came from the factory.
Is it worth refurbishing them? Or should I get some IMASAF instead?
BTW: can anyone tell me what is in that middle part behind the catalyst? Is it another catalyst or a silencer?
Thanks!

I'd remove the Fox back boxes if they are rotten and just get a local fabricator to put straight through pipes on. I have a spare set of OEM which I would sell at the right price. I've sprayed them with black heat resistant rust prevention spray.

Yep in 2006 when I purchased a 2001 3200 with 23k miles on it I think it was 2 weeks before one fell off.

You’ve done well having them last that long.

I dispatched an email to Larini then all was well :)

Hi Phil! Sorry if I did not explain correctly but Fox are very nice and made of high quality Stainless Steel. The rotten ones are oem. And even though the Fox are straight through and the oem are not (just rotten empty) the sound of the oem was really awesome. But as Conaero suggested I will probably try to find Larinis with original optics and improve the sound by removing the middle silencer. I think you did the same on yours?
