Rant

Had to drive from Leeds to Heathrow and back today and about 60 miles (a third of the distance on the M1) is 50 mph average speed cameras. I understand they've got to do works but why all at the same time. Went in the soot chucker and the average MPG was more than the average speed which can't be right. It wasn't even that busy.

And another thing, when they do finish the 'smart' motorway the numpties still drive in the second outside lane so there's no benefit.

And finally, why do they light the speed limit signs up when there's no congestion?

Anyway rant over - I feel better now.

To answer your three questions,

No, it's not right.

Because they're asleep.

To make money off speeders...

I might be being cynical.

I did Bristol to Wakefield and back joined the M1 off the M42...yes more miles of roadworks than clear motorway...

Bit that got my goat was despite doing about 52/53 in the 50 zone and passing most cars to the left of me (only just at walking speed) doing 50 I was still followed by BMW and Audi drivers flashing their lights for me to pull over and let them get in front on me behind the next car.

What peevs me is that they put the average speed cameras on and shut down the lanes thus jamming up the traffic but I never see anybody doing any bloody roadworks, ever!

From Newbury to Brunty at the weekend, I reckon 70% of the journey was in controlled Average speed checks! Utterly mind numbing.

Aw mate, that's awful.... ;)

From here to Brunty, and back, not a single camera. Actually, there is 'one', but it's right at a junction where I need to turn off anyway, so no danger of being caught doing over 50mph. Makes a useful signpost to remind me to turn off :)

Some lovely country roads out there, very quiet indeed in the summer evening after we left the Joiners Arms. Am I helping?

Managed motorways can work but like traffic lights on roundabouts that are on at 4am they need to be managed properly

Last year I was on the M6 at 1am

The lights came on 40mph which makes the cameras active so I'm doing 40 on an empty road for miles, nothing going on, then we're back to 70

A mile further up STILL IN THE MANAGED SECTION there's 10 guys in the road fixing a bridge but no restriction

That's unbelievable, the motorways are covered in cameras and traffic sensors, how can they not know they've got the wrong section restricted

You carry on thinking that, keeps you all down there :tomato4:

Once the M6 turns to cobbles you know it's time to turn back

I know that, so am I , last year I had a job where I had to drive into London 2-3 times a week , I wanted a rocket launcher on it after a week.

Newbury is nice though but if I sold my detached house I'd probably just about afford your garage

I'm not even a proper northerner , been in Warrington since 1990 , from Northants originally

I once asked a guy when I'd be a northerner, he said my great grandchildren would be southern b^$?^€}s

:)

About an hour on the train from your place into 'London', isn't it? ;)

It's just over an hour to London from either of my houses mate, and I don't have to live in the overcrowded expensive south. Skiing or empty rolling countryside - it's a tough one. :D

Avoid the M1 like the plague at the moment due to those 50mph controlled areas especially the between the M6 & J15 and Smart motorways well they just aren't

im on the M1 a lot. I don't understand it.

When the "restriction" comes on the overhang does that make the cameras active? if theres no restriction does that mean I can drive say 80mph and not get flashed?

when they say "smart" motorway do they mean they always monitor speeds etc?

Dem.

The red circle speed signs are legally enforsable so if a camera is on the gantry it can clock your speed and is linked to the road sign.

There is some debate if the signs are off or indicate the national speed limit apples round circle with a slash across it. It is also known for these camers to be active when only the NSL applies.

The caution signs in the central reservation are not enforsable for speed but can be used for cases of due care and attention prosecutions.
