Pulled for numberplate

Copper followed me in to work today and did his usual patronising talk about my number plate.

I explained that it had been on my cars in that format since 2006.

I pleaded ignorance, we both knew I knew.

Anyway, he says he will report it to the DVLA, which I doubt he will.

Will the DVLA write to me and warn me to re-space my lettering to legal requirements?

What gets my goat is my plate is spaced M8TT X and it should be M8 TTX and the DVLA sell these plates for highly inflated prices knowing that this will happen.

So whats going to happen do you think and should I continue to drive round with it or change it?

Can the police ticket and fine and even give me penalty points for this type of offence???

My understanding is that they can issue a fixed penalty and fine!!

Well TTX is Fugu poison and M8 is mate. So I guess you could use it as a good plate to warn someone???

I'll wait until the DVLA write to me if they don't I'll just not take it into Chichester.

The copper never said anything about tickets or fine just said that if the DVLA receive numerous complaints the DVLA can take the plate off me....and I suppose sell it to anther person for 1,000's

Didn't he give you a 'ticket' to get some new plates made? I've had that happen to me, but the 'ticket' was just to take to Halfrauds and have them make up new plates. I didn't get a fine or have to produce the vehicle with the new plates fitted. That was about 8 years ago though.

Pathetic ain't it......police should spend more time catching real crims IMO.

Too right. I understand if the characters have been made to look like different letters or numbers, but if you've just changed the spacing, who gives a ****?

I think the police have the power to fine you and demand you space the letters properly. I'd imagine that if you hear from DVLA they will warn you that you might lose the right to use the number (despite many of us spending £thousands we are only buying the right to use that number, we never own the number outright). I'd wait and see if you hear anything. I reckon you could get a couple of warnings before anything serious happens.

I had the same a few years ago. I got a £30 fine, took pics and the warned me that the DVLA could take the plate off me.

I think its £60 now though so you were lucky really.

Correct me if I'm wrong matt but the police did not charge you but advised they intend to inform the dvla? If they do report your plate the dvla have 3 choices. Warn you, do nothing or remove it from you. IMO, which probably means nothing, the middle option seems most likely since I am aware of a mate with a similar plate having been reported and nothing happened.........but as I said, just my opinion.

Matt ,

The Number plate "offence" is non-endorsable but fines up to £1000.00 can be levied.

10 years ago I had an Evo 8 with a stick on number plate on the front near side. the font & size was correct but I got fined the full £1000.00 as it went to court.
Think I pi55ed them off though as I accelerated off a roundabout...

Nothing will happen. The police can issue on the spot fines and requests to change to the correct plate font and dimensions but in this case they chose not to. Can I ask if it was one copper by himself?

Yes one copper on his own. Turned round when he saw me then followed me to work and spoke to me there.

No ticket given just said that DVLA can take the plate if repeat offences. I'll give it a couple of weeks then call them to see if anything is logged. If not, I'll just carry on as I have done for the last 10 years.

Mind you if the same copper sees it again he will be more forceful next time I feel.

I got caught by a scammera van, got a warning off local plod saying if it was spotted again I'd get a fine (£30 at the time, now £60 I think) I changed it. Next time I put it on my car I might chance it again as it was 4/5 years ago. Mine was a simple mis space X1 X MA instead of X1 XMA, ludicrous to even waste a stamp on the warning they sent, and they complain they are undermanned and run off their feet.

Got done for small plate on a bike - had to fit right size plate and get an MoT certificate, no fine but cost me £20 for the mot guy to sign a form. Luckily no fine, but the telling off I got you would have thought I was responsible nei me for the whole counties road traffic offences in the last month
I didn't actually fit the plate either - just showed the garage right size plate, he said "well your only going to put that back on when you get home!"
The bike is serviced an mot'd at that garage
