Just had an email from my brother in law working in Abu Dhabi, stating Maserati intends to target BMW in the lower price bracket. Comments? Is this a plan to increase sales , possibly watering down the brand in the process?

Everything is possible......but the real sales will take place in the two biggest markets......India/China, if things go as they should over next few years. Not enough very rich guys in the Middle east!

Isn't that the Ghibli which is aimed at the 5 series buyer...?

Obvious question but since when has BMW been a "lower price bracket car"?

As far as I'm aware it's a premium product. Ford and Vauxhall are lower price bracket.

Maserati will be looking to get Porsche (Cayenne and Panamera), BMW (X5, 5, 6, & 7 series), Mercedes (ML, E, S and Coupe) and to a lesser extent Jaguar XF drivers for the Masser 4x4, Ghibili and QP.

The 4200 and Gransport could arguably be competitors to M3 and CLK AMG. There's apparently a new model coming soon.

The Granturismo competitor to a 6 series?

The Ghibli to 5 series and E Class.

The QP to 7 series, S class, and Panamera.

The 4x4 has obvious competitiors.

Trying to take on a what could be called a mass market manufacturer, by a what could be called a Supercar manufacturer, is a bit weird. If Maserati have actually decided to become a mass market supplier, which I doubt, they would have a real battle on their hands. Stick to what you know and get it right..!!

But what would you have called Porsche pre the Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne and Panamera?

I know exactly what you mean and personally I don't think that move has done Porche a massive amount of good. They may have sold a few more cars, but now such as the Boxster is falling in to the really cheap 2 seater bracket and as common as muck, how do you shake that impression of the name off, not easy.

I agree with you it has de-valued what was a prized brand into a common brand. But it is obvious that Maserati are planning something very similar from all the new models they are releasing.

Could the Ghibli be Maserati's Boxster? I can see it getting pretty cheap in the years to come.

I doubt Maserati would ever launch a Boxster competitor, would be a huge shame if they did. A re-introudction of the Gransport, a 911 competitor, would be fine.

Personally bringing Maserati down in to that bracket would be a shame and not do much for the resale values of our cars in years to come. I know they may wish to sell more cars, but we all know what Maserati spares cost and cheaper more common models just to compete, well you can imagine the crash and burn effect a few years down the line..??
