Hi Rags,

I know this tip doesn't allow full postcode entry, but (in case you weren't already aware) you can input the first part of the postcode to find the area...
Ref. Sat Nav post #8

Hope that helps,
T

The impression I get is that no-one knows how or if it allows post codes. I will therefore assume none of you go more than 5 miles from home :frusty5:
My wifes Audi has a contract that updates her sat nav. It is absolutely fantastic:
We were heading to Oxford a while back and on the radio we heard of delays at one of the junctions on the M6.
We looked at the sat nav "as we were listening to the news cast" and the route was being recalculated to circumvent the delay!! Now that is a proper Sat Nav.

So, in summary - I am looking at a 30Gb hard drive in my Maserati Granturismo (which cost nearly £100k new) and have been told that my warranty "must" include the media centre because a replacement one costs £5k......only to find that:

The sat nav is ****.
The GSM phone is obsolete.
The radio reception is suspect.
My Ipod connector uses the media centre as a modulator and hence is affected by interference.

Mmmmm - NOT impressed so far.:bigcry3:

Seriously though it is pants and TBH all audio in recent Maseratis has been pants too. Its sort of an in joke at the factory I recon.

I have TomTom app on my iPhone and its brilliant. Works off the GPS and stores all the maps on the phone so no need for a data connection. It is pricey at £79 for Western Europe but worth every penny. I use it on my bike too.

The iPhone in landscape mode also sat well propped up against the AC controls in my GTS.

I run my own chauffeuring business therefore feel qualified to comment on this subject.

On using the Maserati Sat Nav for the first time I looked for the road where we live and at no level did the device find the post code, road, or town. In the end I found a road approximately 1.5 miles from our address and used it as a guideline. These devices are antiquated, inaccurate and incomplete, my car was registered in January 2011 however it's obvious the system was out of date prior to build.

I understand we do not buy these cars for their Sat Nav's however again I reiterate I definitely expect more for the amount of money we pay to get in to one. Where does that leave me?

Well, inside the car I'm surrounded by piano black trim, black alcantara roof and sumptuous red leather. The thought of spoiling this view with a Garmin Nuvi stuck to the infotainment screen makes me cringe however on long journeys where I do not know the way this is exactly what I will do!

Compromise? It's not a male trait or so the missus keeps saying...

In my business 'getting close' to a destination is not good enough. And I'm always going to places I've never been before because destinations are the clients choices, not mine.
Installing a decent sat nav really is not that hard, premium German brands manage it well so why not the Italians? What I find interesting is that someone in Italy must have sat down and decided this is a good system for a £100,000 car.

Has anyone used the system in the new Ghibli or GP? I wonder if progress has been made.

Safe driving guys

What you have to remember is that the QP is a 2004 car and the GranTurismo is based on it to so the tech is very old. I've had D3 A8's before which were built 2003 through 2010 and they were no better. It's just a time and a place. If the nav is a big issue for you then you need to dump the car.

Incidently the TMC on mine is good and I always look at it to help with planning a route. We also have a 2010 S series Audi and I'd take the nav in my 2011 Maserati over that. The thing is the nav on the main premium brands has taken a big step forward with model renewals in the last three years. I've no idea if Maserati has caught up as I've not driven a new QP or Ghibli but the quality of informatics was not high on my list when I bought the car and, I suspect, that is the case for the majority of owners.

I've had virtually brand new sat navs which are next to useless in some areas due to a new road being built or an old one blocked off. For forty quid (special offer price) the TomTom Western Europe iPhone seems to work pretty well and is constantly updated. As Matt says, it props up quite neatly on the centre console, but as the spoken directions are pretty clear it's not really necessary to even look at it. I've also downloaded the PocketGPSWorld app with speed camera locations, which is pretty good.

Like many I didn't buy a Maserati for the satnav and whilst I'd prefer it if it was better from a personal perspective I can live without it.

AdamN: Of course we didn't buy the maser because of the satnav, but that's not the point is it? I had a '55 plate M3 and the sat nav there allowed post code entries. So a 55 plate means around about 2001/2002 technology...
There is absolutely no excuse for the **** "It-ies" (sic) to think about the export market. If they can build reverse gear in all their military vehicles why can't they build comprehensive sat navs to point the way back home too!!!
I bought a cheap and nasty Tom Tom about 7 years ago from halfords. It has NEVER let me down and every so often I plug it into my main Laptop and download the latest updates which include road changes - marvellous piece of kit no bigger than 3" x 3". Guess where it lives now???

Plenty of Audis' only got full postcode entry recently. All makes are different, get over it.
