Porsche 911 - Best looking one

My next car should have the engine behind me, I've decided. But in general that means having a car with just two seats, or totally pointless back seats.

The new Renault Twingo therefore solves your problem - rear engine, rear wheel drive & rear seats - what more could you ask for?!

I'm sure Porsches are fantastic machines but they just don't stir or inspire my imagination like a Maserati. I can name three other Maserati cars that I would love to own at some point being GS,GT and a QP. I can also think of several Alfa's that I would love to own or own again in some cases. I can't think of a single Porsche or for that matter Ferrari that makes me think if I had the money I would buy that.

It's great if the car you own doesn't depreciate or depreciates slowly but if you don't enjoy driving the car or it doesn't tick all the boxes then its not for me.

Why? Why do you want a huge pendulum effect? I'm not talking mid-engined like Fezza's. Lambo's etc... I'm talking Porsche who put them right at the back near the bumper so as soon as you lose traction you invariably end up going through a bus shelter backwards!

It makes absolutely no sense at all and is one of the reasons why they called the original 911 Turbo the "widowmaker".

Love this video though, some serious driving from both drivers (CGT is rapid) but braking on Flugplatz whilst airborne is going to result in this.

Not THAT far behind, Phil. You're right, it is extraordinary - it's a physically very small engine but the fact that it's right behind the wheels and the car still handles really well is quite impressive.

911 haters have just never driven one in anger. Who cares why the design dynamics were never changed over the years. Having the noise behind you and the way this governs the driving experience is fantastic.

However, there are good ones and bad ones. I've owned 8 911s and enjoyed them all in different ways. 993 turbos are the absolute best for me and far more exciting than the 996 or 997 turbo. The wide body cars looks ace but aren't as much
fun to drive as the narrow carrera2 cars. A good example of substituting style over substance. Never owned a GT2 or GT3 however I have driven both in their 996 variants. The GT2 is incredible and I understand why it's gone ballistic in value. The
GT3 is great too however given the larger production numbers etc, I don't really understand why these are now £60k minimum. I also loved my first 911 which was a 964 c4. They were unloved for years and are now being appreciated as the 993
values head off to outer space.

An ideal car for me would be one of the Paul Stephens (or a Singer if I won the Lotto) versions which mix the more modern mechanicals with the 70s looks. Fantastic.

Had a few Porsches including an "old" (now classic) 911.
Loved them. 911 had the most sensitive steering in any car I have driven. You could feel every pebble on the road.
Yes engine was in the wrong place but that was part of the charm and attraction in the same way anything Italian has its foibles. You love them because or despite them.
My 911 wasn't an "easy" car to drive to its limit but that was what made it so appealing. The mechanical noise from behind was intoxicating and different to likes of a Maserati.
It is unfair to judge a cars performance unless you have driven one and I haven't driven the newer cars. Only reason I don't have one is because I have had one and want to sample other delights before I fall off my perch. In same way a musician or band deserves respect after 50 years in the business I feel the 911 deserves the same respect. It must have something or it would have disappeared long ago.

Hi Stewart !

We didn't get anything at the auction, it seems there were too many crazy punters there looking at silly prices.

Was wondering how you got on!
In hindsight we should have trailered up several Maseratis and flogged them and made a tidy profit!!
Thought I should leave before I did something stupid. Things were getting desperate when a 50 year old MG Midget was the car I wanted the most!!

OK yes you got me, I would love a 993 Turbo.

They look the business and have performance that is still exceptional :)

Shame that they have so many 00000's on the price!

I don't get the 996 Turbo though to be honest, I know they have been good value, but somehow it's never appealed.

Oh and this is well worth a watch. Rudy is probably the biggest Porsche nut out there! Makes most of us look like mere amateurs!

Good looking and Porsche IMO do not go together sadly.

Except the 1950s 550 Spider. Now that's one lovely Porsche (if completely unattainable).
