As others have mentioned, take a look at the Ford Ranger.
We have a 2012 2.2 XLT manual Double Cab and it's excellent. More than enough power to pull a horse trailer with 2 large horses so I don't see the need for the larger 3.2.
We get an average of about 27mpg. If you do longish motorway journeys and keep it below 60mph then it'll do high 30mpg but we prefer to get there quicker!
The new model drives like a car and is comfortable for long journeys unlike the pre-2012 model that drove like a truck. My wife has ours as a company car through our company with all fuel paid. Being classed as a commercial vehicle the BIK works out pretty good. Note that not all pickups are classed as commercial vehicles for company car tax - you need to check the gross weight and load capacity.

This might surprise some forum members, but I also have a Navara. The 4-door king-cab jobby in auto. Bought new in 2012 and it's now done 78,000 miles. It's avareged 32 mpg in that time, mostly on A-roads - it's hardly ever in town or stop/start traffic. It's the Tech version, so high spec, with full leather heated seats, excellent Sat-Nav, hard-drive music etc.
Yes it's too big for a super-market car park and the ride is a tad bouncy when the backs empty, but it's been a reliable work horse that'll be replaced for another when its get to about 95,000 miles. Indeed, this one replaced a similar Nav we had before that one got to that mileage. But the Ford Ranger will also be test driven, just in case.

I too am on my second Navara and I do like this one. They are launching a new model this year which I will give a try shortly, it looks decent

Love my Ranger and decided on it after my Google research on the forums and so easy to drive with the 6 speed auto and the 3.2 5 cylinder is really quick with 200 ponies just 3 years old and a Ford approved with a 3 year warranty.IMG_20160113_171235.jpgIMG_20160113_182330.jpg

This is my old Harley F150 Pickup, 350bhp 5.4Litre V8 Sounded awesome, used to get about 20mpg, loved it and wish I hadn't got rid.

I ship vehicles all over the world and by far we bring more pickups in than anything else, have a look here: - https://www.facebook.com/goldenchariotsltd

If you fancy something different rather than run of the mill, then a nice rat rod pickup could work wonders :)

Just got back last weekend having done 1100 kilometers in my 3.2 Ranger XLT 4x4 6 speed auto and she averaged 7.2 liters per 100 kilometers which in old money is 39 mpg.
To say I was pleased would be an understatement.IMG_20160204_144623.jpg
Have to say the roads up North were mint gravel roads that I chose on purpose being a Rally boy and my co pilot was exceptionally good on the maps.
Was stunning up around The Bay of Islands in the Northland region.
