Painting wheel hubs

When I replaced the discs I painted the hubs black as this was the only suitable paint I had. The results did not look good as every bit of the discs rusts, more so than the previous discs

So I painted the bits I missed with silver paint but it looks worse I think
now than before

What colour have others painted theirs..?

I use the metallic black heat resistant paint from Halfords. It comes out a very dark grey and takes ages for the rust to come through if you put on a couple of good coats.

I like the silver personally. My 360 ones are like that and on a silver car with red callipers look the dogs dangly bits for me.

Any other volunteers willing to post up pics. I'm still undecided but my brand new rotors are now not looking as nice after only one wash!
VHT make a high temp caliper paint (spray can) in clear but I cant find any user reviews on this. I spoke to supplier who claims it would be fine.....

You could use vht exhaust manifold paint which you can get in quite a few colours and more than up to temperatures generated by the brakes. Phil.

I used high temp silver so it would not discolour when the discs get hot and its ok. looks great, but then I have silver alloys.

Silver does not look that bad, but the clear polished hub looks great, all are much better than the rust..!!

Two similar threads running.
I have just posted a pic on http://www.sportsmaserati.com/showthread.php/11133-Brakes-a-quick-question but I will put it here too because the thread title is more apt.
Mods please remove if it shouldn't be double posted

My disc rotor hubs have been coated with VHT High Temp Brake calliper drum and rotor paint in clear.
I am hoping this will last a while because I am very pleased with the result.

This looks great.

It's a job I want to do in the summer. I was thinking about getting a silver spray paint that is similar to my wheels, but the VHT does look good. Will check to see if it's on sale in UK.

If you are going down the black route PJ1 is the best I have used (if you can still get it............ seems it contains something the nanny state doesn't like now) and comes in different high temp finishes including gloss, satin and matt.
Still for sale on the bay of doom.
You could always get them ceramic coated? Not that expensive and would last for ages. Camcoat are the folk for that. Lots of different colours as well.

George - you say you used clear VHT!? What have you got underneath it?

So far I've found it for sale in Satin Clear as well as Silver Grey an Aluminium which could also work.

For that money it's worth buying a can per hub MAF, or at least 2 so you don't run out..??

Will you just spray the clear lacquer over the hubs as the are? Are your hubs in pretty good nick?

I'm thinking I need to spray the hubs first then finish with the lacquer.

If the discs are brand new and come in plain steel, then I would degrease them and spray them with the VHT Laquer, retaining the new steel look,,!! If they have started to rust, either clean them off with a drill polishing brush, or paint them in a VHT paint..!! All depends what condition the discs are in and if they will polish to shiny steel, or not..!!

This is the actual product I used, as well as the cleaner which was used before applying the clear.
The clear needs to be cured by either baking in oven or the heat from braking will also cure it according to directions. I went the latter option because the rotors had already been fitted.
Nothing else was used underneath the clear. Straight on to the cleaned metal which was pretty much brand new in my case.
