While other Masers are being tucked up for the winter, I took advantage of the continued good weather and did another 24hr road trip to Wales. Think I found the perfect route this time:
When I did the Yorkshire trip I found I was spending too much time on boring A routes getting from one driving road to another, so this time I wanted to remedy that.
The drive from Oswestry (where I arrived at the Premier Inn after midnight and someone in the room next door had a shower before 6am..) to Bala through Penybontfawr was awesome - rush hour and nobody about. Lots of different terrain, from open mountain roads to twisty country lanes.
I went up and down the east side of the Evo triangle three times, pretty much finishing off my brake pads in the process... that is a seriously fast, addictive road. And then it was back to finish the road from Bala to Ffestiniog - if you were pushed for time, just that straight route from Oswestry to Ffestiniog would be an epic drive.
On to do the Llanberis Pass, which was unfortunately as much fun for me as the Snake Pass was - too much traffic. Then the long drive down through Snowdonia, plenty of decent roads and of course scenery to look at.
I love the A44 from Aberystwth, the perfect route for the GS - a fast, sweeping road that has been resurfaced so not many pesky bumps to upset the car. And then, with the sun starting to go down, the road from Builth Wells to Brecon, a real roller-coaster.
I think I'm probably going to sell the GS in the near future so this was a fitting finale...
