Crickey that is shocking, I hadn't realised just how small they are, or is it how fat cars of today are?!

It's not the garage getting smaller but definitely cars getting fatter. It's been going on for while with wider and wider tracks.

Excellent photo. Reminds me of when I saw a Mini Countryman parked next to a Volvo estate....and the Mini was bigger!

Very true Dem,

The original MK 1 golf is far smaller than the Polo now with the Lupo being closer to the original size. Makes you wonder if they drop off the larger models as time progresses. I know that most of the Euro car makers have such as Vauxhal Opal, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat etc where as the Germans just get a larger range of cars to fill the mini car vacuum.

When I bought the GTS, I had to screw a batten to the floor that the front wheels rolled up to as I had an inch front and back spare!

The GTS is gone but the batten is still there, I trip over it on a daily basis putting the rubbish out!

Its a reminder to check next time before I buy.

I can see why, the GTS is a giant. I just swapped my cars around and the Fiat 500 (new model, not classic!) is in the garage where the GTS lives and despite the 500 being huge compared to the original, you could almost get 2 in the garage where the GTS goes!

Still can't see the similarity between the Fiat 500L and the Fiat 500L (or is it an F)?

Also not sure why there's a problem getting cars into garages??

It's not the garage getting smaller but definitely cars getting fatter. It's been going on for while with wider and wider tracks.

It's sad to say but the only way this will be reversed is through the wallet.

Around my way there are many many Victorian roads which were designed for two carriages to pass each other while leaving space for parked carriages. For the last hundred years this worked fine and these roads were comfortably two-way up until as late as the '80s. Now they are effectively single track roads with drivers having to wait in frustration for oncoming traffic to clear. Occasionally they lock up completely and the Council's only option is to make them 'No Through Route' or remove parking down one side; effectively halving the available parking.

Simply our cars have got too big for our roads.

People aren't going to volunteer to buy smaller cars; and manufacturers won't develop them without demand. One carrot which would work would be a two-tiered parking charge: 50% cheaper for cars under a certain width, maybe 50% discount on the Congestion Charge too. This would drive demand for narrower cars.

God no...Suzuki Waggon R (Ridiculous ) anyone...would rather walk!

Thats the situation in Japan...first you need to have a parking space then you can buy a car...unless its kne of the above type.
