being new forgive stupid Q but have seen a few posts re obd diagnostic plug in tool and wanted to ask first do I need one and if so, which one do people use for a 2000 3200 gta?

Your car is probably not OBD but Alfa 3-Pin so this should do the trick:

I don't have a laptop (only use a basic notebook for surfing and a Mac for photo processing) so am I going to have to get one?

I have an old Panasonic Tough book that would do you. Much cheapness

Not sure if you will actually need it. I have used my OBD reader on mine once in over two years, to reset the throttle sensor, when I inadvertantly stood on it while car was going through its checks. (Mines 2001 and compliant so makes it easier.)
