well - the noise only occurred the once (I didn't like to use the a/c too much after that), but just been for a full diagnostic.
Turns out the refrigerant was down at 20%, althouh pressure was good. Sucked all the old stuff out, emptied the dryer, refilled with correct refrigerant, oil and dye and it's now cool as a cucumber !
Which is nice.
