Hi everyone, after nearly 2 years of obsessing over buying a weekend car I decided to take the plunge and buy myself an early 30th birthday present... I considered all sorts options from M3's, S5, Porsche's to 370Z's and to be honest I didn't think for a second that the 4200 was feasible on my budget until I was reading a review on EVO comparing the 996 Carrera 2S to the Maserati 4200 as used purchases. Evo obviously preferred the 911 as they are Porsche fanboys (no offence Porsche owners) but that tweaked my interest and the obsession shifted!

I am the proud owner of a 2003 Maserati 4200 Coupe GT Manual. It has 58k miles on it now I have taken it on a road trip. I bought it from a local dealer who has a good reputation and sells all sorts of high power performance cars, he provided me with a 1 year Auto guard premium warranty with a £5 spend which covers most things down to the CD Player and timing chain (I will be renewing that next year!)

Currently going through the process of working out the niggles, I have opened a thread talking about how the lamps have blown on the Sport button and on the indicator behind the taco when the sport button is on. I will be changing the bulb behind the button soon. I have picked up a new bonnet badge from Maranello in Egham which I will be attempting to change this weekend.

Other niggles I have found so far, parking sensors don't work (no error message on info system), rear discs are pitted and need changing soon - under heavy breaking there is a bit of vibration through the pedal - also the brakes are not that great. Apparently it has newish front discs/pads and new rear pads. I am going to invest in new rear discs ASAP and steel braided lines for the front. Headlight lenses need restoring, I have the Meguiars lense restore kit on order. Usual interior wear issues, I saw a tip from someone on another thread to use fine wet/dry sanding paper to get the peeling chrome off the surrounds of the vents which is a great idea

On the positive side the dealer did a major service, replaced bushes on all four corners, changed main oil feeder pipe which was leaking, new tyres, front discs and pads and rear pads. The car was sent to the paint shop and was machine polished (no swirls!), the alloys were restored in dark glossy grey, painted the rusty disc hubs black, calipers black and wheel nuts black. Also he restored the drivers seat so it does not show an wear. All mechanical work was done at a tuning specialist in Woking.

Anyway I'm in the process of sorting her out and I will take photos along the way, here are some I have taken so far!

During my road trip on the weekend... way too much grit on the roads at the moment but it is still so pretty!

Thanks for the welcome, I always do my research and it does not take long to figure out these cars are reliable if looked after and as I am used to maintaining a powerful sub-M BMW then the maintenance is not that much more expensive for the Maser. Half my friends still think I am bonkers though... the other half are more supporting at least.

Congrats on your purchase fernadosisfaster. Another manual car on the forum too. Enjoy the miles of smiles.

Thank you kenny, it really is a grin enducing machine.

Anyone going to the Auto Italia day at Brooklands Museum in April?

Congratulations on your new toy and welcome to the forum, you'll find it fun and informative.

You're in luck - I can help you with rear discs at very sensible prices as I have some from the last group buy. PM me for details if you're interested.

Hi

Many congratulations

The rear parking sensors are possibly aftermarket. I can thoroughly recommend Inpulse Car Audio in Watford to fix this. DK Engineering use them, that's pretty much the best recommendation you can get!

Discs, give them a good hard braking test (watch out in this weather). Even brand new discs will rust in this weather. You could also look at skimming them. Have a chat to Maserati Shed on the South Coast, best value independent bad very knowledgeable. If you need new discs contact MAF on the forum, he's got exact replacements at a much lower cost.

Next thing has to be an exhaust upgrade, you'll love it! Either remove the rear back boxes and replace with straight pipes. Or, put in the forum X-Pipe, Benny is your man for that.

Enjoy, it's a great car!!

Thanks rossy. I'm liking the rasp of the Larini back boxes. I saw some lightly used ones for sale before I bought the car for only £300 a piece, I wish I got them now.

Welcome to the crazy world of Maserati ownership and enjoy.

Lol thanks Steve...

Welcome, nice :)

Cheers allan

Well done, chap.

Your parking sensors. Do you get any beeps at all from the system when you engage reverse?

Welcome.

The factory reverse sensors are easy to spot as they are not round but have flat sides to the sensor as if they have been pinched. There is no fault display on the dash but if they are factory they will emmit a long bleep when you put the car into R.

They are the same as early BMW ones.

Re the lights. They have a protective film of anti UVA stuff and aggressive hand car wash chemicals brake this down. If you cut them with the polish kit you will need to protect them from long term sunlight to avod them becoming brittle.

Cheers Catman, no beeping at all... Mirrors on both sides adjust though which is good that works

COngrats on the purchase welcome to the most informative Maserati forum there is

Thanks zag!

Lovely colour. Welcome to the mad house!

Plenty of us are off to Auto Italia.

Hey Geoff, thanks. I like a mad house, keeps things interesting.

That's great, I look forward to meeting some of the forumers then. The only other person I know is going is my colleague who has a silver Lancia Fulvia.

Hi safrane, thank you for your advice, here is a photo of the back bumper I just took:

Can you tell from that photo? The edges seem flat.

On the headlight I am looking to buy Meguiars Lens correction kit which comes with Plast RX plastic polish and their headlight protectant which should protect the plastic from UV rays if I keep applying it. I am not bothered about the kit with the drill attachment it does not have the protectant and there is nothing wrong with a lot of elbow grease. http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotive/products/g3700-headlight-lens-restoration/ Also it has the sanding pads so I can try to get rid of this scratch on the headlight too:

Hi thank you!

Ah I wish I had a car warehouse... I'm confident one day as I'm only still relatively young and it's early in my career! :)

The cars in my household are:

2015 BMW 318d SE touring (company tractor)
2003 BMW E46 330i Saloon Sport (old personal car now for sale)
2003 Maserati 4200 Coupe GT
2012 VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI R-Line (Mrs FernandoIsFasterThanYou's car)

The cars belong to the dealer I got the car from, he has some very interesting cars for sale in his collection included a mint Gran Sport... he is an absolute top bloke as well... am I allowed to link his website here? If not I will remove it: http://www.ripleycarriage.co.uk/

Hi. The reverse sensors are after market ones.

The headlight kit soinds like the right way to go...just mask the paint so its not damaged.
