Neighbour trouble

Just spend a very pleasant couple of hours cleaning and pampering the car and was feeling very at peace with the world. Then I fired her up to nip down to Halfords for more cleaning products only to be confronted by a neighbour who lives opposite, in tears. She says she can't cope with the sound of my car and that I had woken her up (1615 on Sunday). It turns out that she has a medical complaint that means she cannot sleep much at night and has to sleep during the day. She also hinted that she was not the only neighbour who did not appreciate the sound of the Maserati V8. She literally begged me to do something about it.

I love the sound of my car but I don't like being antisocial and upsetting people and I certainly don't want my car to be an object of hate. Neither do I want any neighbour agro - its the worst thing ever.
So I will have to go back to the original exhaust. I currently have a Larini H pipe and straight throughs (Parisien will correct me if I'm wrong). Do I have to revert to the full original system to be safe, or do you think I can get away with putting the back boxes on and keeping the H pipe?

BTW Frank - I have just spotted the video you posted on the Exhaust thread of 'our' car. What a great little film!

The H pipe will not give any big difference in volume, keeping the OEM back boxes.

Congrats on your attitude, at not wanting to cause any bad comments. Shows you respect other lives. Greeks do not do like that.

That's a real shame, but big for you doing the right thing (at least that's my opinion)

Sure the Larini's will sell well.

kudos on your attitude. it would be oh so easy to start a rammy over this not being in the wrong.........but in the end the long term stress would not be worth it imo. can't help with your exhaust Q but I'm sure others will be along shortly to help out.
the only fly in the ointment is that these are not quiet machines even when not modified..........so your neighbours may not be fully appeased even if you go through with shifting back.

There is just one thing: On the day before you remove the boxes from your car, you MUST invite MAF and Benny for coffee at your house..... Maybe the old lady then will move to another house!!!!

In that situation, I'd explain to her precisely what I was doing to help the then problem, and express the sincere hope that it would solve it for her. At least that way she's buying into the process, even if the fix may not be everything she desires.

I have the answer. Contact Benny and get him to sort you some modified GS rear boxes. Mine have these and they are 'Asbo' when open but kitten quiet when closed. If you don't have the vaccume valve system in place you can retro fit it for about £100 to a 4200.

Job done!

Another option is to park your car somewhere else. If you have to pay for it then get your neighbour to contribute, if the quiet is that important she will jump at the chance.

Yes, hat's off to you for being neighbourly about it. Too many in today's world would tell her to swivel on it.

Much as we love the sounds of our cars, and bizarre as it seems for her to be disturbed at 16:15, it is her right to enjoy the quiet enjoyment of her own home so ultimately you are doing the right thing.

Tell her never to move where I live in central London: non-stop emergency services sirens, police helicopters, drunks in the street, music from nearby pubs. I'm in Brittany at the moment, woke up at 5 am this morning and couldn't go back asleep because it's too quiet.

Exactly - that's the sort of thing I'm considering for mine. I can't be doing with leaving at 5am with the full antisocial blat coming from the car while I drive past every other house in the village. It's just asking for trouble. Valves to allow the Jeckyll and Hyde deal sounds like the way to go to me.

I must admit the first thing I thought was "**** her" and he sleep issues but the reality is that a loud car is annoying as **** to others especially if they don't like cars or don't even get them. Fair play for sorting it but as Matt has suggested I would try to find a solution that is best of both worlds in that you can have it loud when you want or quiet to suit the Neighbours. Good luck!!!

No -one ever complained about "our" 4200 Petbri.....Matts suggestion sounds ideal, plus your neighbours will think your fabulous if you keep them happy.

The H pipe only improves the flow, nothing else

Thanks Frank - so if I just swap the original back boxes and keep the H pipe the sound will be near original? I love the look of the H pipe with 4200 on and don't really want to lose it - even though its under the car and nobody can see it...

Thanks too to Matt - great idea and could be the perfect solution. I will do the back box change after Brunty and then check out the options in more detail. I need to solve this pronto if only for my own peace of mind. It is has made me realise that what is uplifting, grin-inducing aural pleasure to me, is in fact just loud unpleasant noise to some others. Hard to believe but apparently true. At the end of the day I want people to love Maserati and not hate them (or me!).

Not sure about loud 4200's, but the odd occasion when I park the old 3200GT overnight in the village in the summer months, people come up and ask for the engine to be started...

They all seem to love the looks of the old Maserati 3200!

You won't notice the difference from an aural perspective Petbri.

If intent on changing it, do tell her you are doing so in advance so you can show you are taking her concerns seriously.

That's a shame for you Petbri, I'm sure the sound was one of the attractions of the car. Definitely investigate the valves option as it's a way to keep both parties happy.

This.

If she tried that in our street her nerves would be shot for weeks after the deafening silence of the neighbours ignoring her.
