Hi Guys,

I’m planning a trip around NC500 for early July leaving from Larne and ferry to Cairnryan.

Can anyone suggest any GTS friendly places to stay? I assume the roads are better than most UK roads, eg proper asphalt, not dirt tracks etc

Roads are mostly OK but traffic can be bad in summer, get out before the motorhomes wake up.

My favourite place on the route is the Kylesku Hotel, great location right on the Loch and wonderful food although its been a few years since we were last there

I've also heard its really busy - especially at that time of year - and finding accommodation can be an issue - the infrastructure just isn't up to coping with the number of visitors

Make sure you have dinner reservations, they are harder to get than rooms in some places.

The roads are mostly ok, some single track with passing places. We were lucky and the camper vans all pulled over to let us by. The "wee mad road" was interesting, not sure I'd take the Fezzer down it again, as was the Applecross Pass. All in all will probably do it again, but might take the Grand Tour shorter route instead as the real gem for me was the west coast.

I'd never head of 'The wee mad road' but it sounds interesting...

The scenery around it was fabulous and stopping at the car park in Drumbeg for a wander around made that leg of the trip. I didn't find the drive remotely relaxing though as even at a slow pace the road twisted and turned so much that, as the driver, you couldn't really appreciate what you were driving through.

Hi
Planning to do the NC500 next year. What does the collective think of this route/accomodation? Is it overly ambitious? Your feedback and reccomendations greatly received!

I have some details from 2020. Some of the roads we did around the west were challenging and we ditched our plan to go around the coast line to Applecross. If you don't want to be driving 3-4 hours a day and want to see the sites then aim for 8-10 days.

I talked to him briefly on the way home. He suggested making it two weeks so you can have some visits to some of the many excellent places along the way. Maybe a day on Sky (ferry and bridge), Arun is beautiful and worth a detour. What he also suggested is making a stop overnight at the foot of the Appledore pass, so that you can drive it multiple times. Finally, the east coast stuff is very anti-climactic after the west.

Yes doing it anti clockwise is best. You can also use the evo test roads where they tested the QP, Panamera and Aston on the way up and then the old army road via Cock Bridge to Inverness. Great road.

We dived into Applecross and quickly fled - it was heaving. Pass of the Cattle was a bit of a challenge as some drivers had a bit of an issue passing on the narrower sections (on another occasion I cycled up it but had to walk down as it was too chilly!). - What time of year are you thinking of doing it?

I did Applecross at this time last year. It was quiet, but challenging due to wind and rain!

I’ve driven the Scottish highlands 8 times now. Always starting in Aberdeen on a Thursday and finishing Edinburgh or Glasgow for a night out Saturday.

We’ve always mixed the route up a bit but that one of yours is basically what we always did.

Aberdeen to bonar bridge then up to tongue. We always stayed in the Mackays rooms Durness on first night. Then would mix it up a bit on the next days. Did Isle of Skye, Kyle of lochalsh. Fort William and Oban etc.

That’s a good route
