Yes the top picture is the near side the other has the missing pin on the offside
I need to dig around a bit in the recess to see if it's jammed up with the cable, it certainly didn't fall out on the drive and my handbrake has need useless for a while - suggesting the pin has been missing for sometime.
I see what you mean about using a bolt - might have to make one from the shank without a head once on place the shroud looks like it will hold it in

Many thanks to David Askew - who will send me the pin free of charge - what a true gent.
Now to painting those callipers....

Whilst on subject of handbrake, I fear I have a binding caliper or shoe etc... I started the car the other day and when I release the handbrake to reverse it out I felt a clunking and then a pulsing and clicking sound, it was almost like when ABS kicks in but there was no pedal feel, the whole car shook a little too for about 30 seconds and then it settled down.

I wonder if it is related to something else I've noted at motorway cruising speeds, If I hold a really steady 70 or 80 I feel through the whole car like a pulsing as if the throttle is on then on really rapidly as if the brake is being applied at a certain rotation of the wheels. It's really hard to explain and one that probably most wouldn't realise but as I'm used too feeling every single niggle from a car this one does bug me on longer journey, funnily the family and other passengers have not noticed it.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cant help with the other issue at 70mph - but the demise of my handbrake and shoes was a very loud bang! after the car had been left for a few days without being moved - you could hear the shoes binding and rubbing as you drove along (sort of a shushing sound).
In typical blinkered optimism I never used the handbrake if the car was being left longer than overnight!

All back together with a rather nice set of Brembo discs - painted and finished of with a set of sprayed red callipers, inside of wheel arch also cleaned and sprayed matt black.
Handbrake is still shockingly bad - barely holds car on auto creep in drive - it might need adjusting a bit but I don't want to adjust any more, my MoT man will do it if need be, I trust him.

Now the front set - which look appalling in comparison!

The paint is Hycote Very High Temperture, from Euro Car Parts, nice gloss finish - 1 can did both calipers, if spraying the discs I used the same paint in silver taking care not to get the paint on the meeting faces of the disc and wheel - only to realise when fitting the wheel the handbrake drum is an inch bigger than the wheel hub - doh! so a quick mask up and sprayed in situ, luckily it was a nice warm day so dry in a couple of hours!

Well done bud, I have mine in middle of July and want it flying straight through. Just tackled the wiper washer which was a bit of a pig. Had to remove the bulkhead scuttle panel and could then see that the pipes to both the washer jets had come away, clipped back the pipe (splits in them) and rejoined them and all jets are spraying fine now.

Next on the job is to tackle corroded brake pipes.

THankfully Mike Roberts sorted my handbrake which has a good bite on it!

Well they looked good but still no handbrake on drivers side and the shoes are rubbing, lovely squeal to make your blood run cold as I drove off.
The adjusters are backed off as far as it will go, I don't think the cable is actually pulling far enough to make them work - the nearside is solid but the offside shoes just don't seem to move very much at all.
Next call is to replace the cable and the nylon wheel tucked under the rear suspension frame

Sounds like the cable, other members have had the same issue, the cable starts to break over time and then jams inside the outer core, replace the section that is not working, or the whole thing..!! Brake shoes should ideally be operated whilst in low speed now and again, two or three times, this will keep the shoes and drums clean..!!

No danger of a handbrake turn with this antiquated design! - new cable, pulley and spring ordered.

Don't need handbrake for a HB Turn, hard lock, low gear, foot hard down and there you have it with our babies..!!

Hodroyd - you are absolutely correct the cable is seized on the offside new one on order from eurospares but not currently in stock.
A real pain in the ar4e to get out - I was debating to remove the prop shaft to get at the centre fixings and spring but after some serious knuckle scraping and spaghetti fingers it came off just two plastic collars and a rubber sleeve hold it in place. The hub end is a different matter - I gave up last night, how does this come off?
It would appear the back plate holes for the little spring clips are worn oversize as they had both fallen out at £175 each on euro spares unless David Askew has sensible priced spare a nut and bolt repair with the springs and a couple of washers should do the trick

AT LAST - it passed! new cable did the trick, the handbrake still wont hold the car on 'the creep' but good enough for MoT
I repaired the back plate and spring clips using 5mm bolts, some washers and nylock nuts, 50mm is plenty - just cut off 5mm if they rub on the hub carrier, you need to be a bit of a contortionist to actually see what you doing trying to fix the little blighters, hold the nut with a pair of long nose pliers and its trial and error until the bolt actually starts to thread itself on.

Annoyingly I don't think there was much else wrong other than a new cable and repair of the handbrake shoe spring pins - other than the little bit on the actuator David Askew kindly sent me
Still £450 well spent on new discs and red calipers.

Did you strip the pulley assembly in the middle of the car where the short cable from the handbrake lever connects to the long cable running between the right and left brake assemblies? This pulley get seized solid and needs to be dismantled and freed up or the handbrake does not work well at all. I recently restored all the handbrake parts, new shoes, hubs last year, and new cable with the back plates taken off and renewed, but the biggest difference was taking the small pulley assembly off the car and cleaning it up completely so it was free to move and it all worked a treat after that.

That was completely stripped out, cleaned, greased - new pulley and return spring - nightmare to get at, I thought I was going to have to remove the prop shaft and exhausts at one point
