MC Stradale Brake Bolts

As some may know, occasionally the bolts which secure the CCM rotors to the brake bells on the GTS MC Stradale suffer from corrosion and the head of the bolt breaks off.

This also happens to a lot of Fezzas as I understand it, and the only solution from the factory is to replace the complete carbon disc, at horrific expense.

The good news for Strad owners, as well as Ferrari California and 458 owners, is that there is now an alternative. @Mr S and I have been working away and we have now had some replacement bolts made out of high spec stainless steel (the same stuff used to secure F1 brake discs), by a company that carry out precision machining work for various F1 teams.

So now, if you have a failed bolt, there is a solution that doesn’t involve spending £6k on new discs.

If anyone needs replacements, drop me a line.

Are you suggesting my brake bolts are corroding?

Joking aside, top work Giuseppe.

Interesting. As these are Brembo brakes, I wonder if the dimensions are the same as for other Brembo CC brakes (like what stop my car from ploughing into the back of Stevo’s).

Highly likely I would say, but I would need a picture of the back of the disc.

Daryl has done most of the leg work here. I provided the bolt, he tested it to identify the material, examined it under a microscope to look for flaws, we went through material choices (heat treated Inconel was absurdly expensive!) and we moved the bolt around between us to get it to the right people to do the job. So this is mainly a credit to @Mr S

This is what it looks like if a bolt has failed.

If any one wants their bolts NDT’d or cleaned up and examined, i am more than happy to do it if they get posted to me.

Hi Zep, are these bolts still available - and in what lengths?

I have a Ferrari FF that has suffered this fate, two bolt heads sheared off and struggling to find replacements. Luckily all ten came out of the disc without damage to the friction material, as I know they can seize in - but I seem to have got away with it.

I've had my hands on a couple of old Ferrari/Maserati CCBs and it seems there are a couple of different lengths of bolts used depending on thickness of the disc. FF ones are the longer if the bolts I've found to date, at 60mm.

Many thanks!

The bolts I have on hand are the right length for the rear of the FF, but too short for the front.

I can get them made at the correct length, but it will take a few weeks.

Thank you very much for the fast reply.

Yes I'm happy to wait a few weeks if that's what it takes, still better than replacing the discs!

Are you able to share pricing with me at this stage? I may consider proactively swapping all bolts on the fronts and rears after what I found on one corner - but I'm still a bit traumatised by working on just one!

Many thanks,

It’s been a while so I need to refresh the pricing from the supplier - I’ll drop you a DM when I have the details.

Morning Zep,

Thanks for your help on this so far - this may be an unanswerable question but I wondered what your thoughts are on re-using OE bolts from a donor disc? I've had the opportunity to get my car back on the road through the generosity of a local specialist who has donated enough bolts from an old worn/degraded disc that was destined to become a wall clock! I still very much intend to put new bolts in if you can help me source them, but I'm now in two minds about how much I should be running the car in the meantime with bolts of unknown health.

I've torqued them back to 10nm which I'd read somewhere, do you recommend a specific torque/angle rating when you supply the replacements?

Many thanks,
