Anyone buying them?
Can't say I've seen one on the road, 93 on AutoTrader, many new dealer stock.

Quite a few registered then.
Just haven't noticed one!
It can't be good with loads available at dealers though...okay if you want one, but to me shows no interest in them, no waiting list.

I was looking at them as there are deals on physical cars but then I got the service interval which was just far too short for the use I would have put it to - 9250 miles or one year. Same for Levante. I don’t know what they have done to a two litre four pot for its mileage limit to be so low.

It's all about profit
Indeed. I guess we all have different stages at which we jump off the purchase decision. For me a Maserati SUV would be getting serviced every eight months which is just nuts when Porsche offers 20000 miles/two year intervals. I've no problem with annual servicing like my XC90 has as long as the mileage interval is lengthy.

Agree, although I do get a little miffed that my T8 xc90 has yearly services despite doing more than half the miles on electricity.

There are plenty of stories of VAG long life servicing killing engines (needle roller bearing in rockers falling to bits, oil pump drive failures, turbo failures due to filters getting blocked) but it reduces the service frequency and TCO and so long life services are all about the profits.

You could reasonably argue that asking for short service intervals is prioritising quality and longevity over sales (and therefore profit). But that would be a positive.

Different extremes of what is possible I guess with different motivation drivers. I remember my various V8 Audis' of two decades back which went to 19000 miles irrespective of how you drove them. I would hope that modern sensors are better and can pick up different usage patterns. I don't mind yearly servicing but the 9250 miles limit seems exceptionally low in the modern age.

Is that the Grecale? Makes little sense as the Ghibli is 12500 (from memory, I CBA to look it up)

Yep and I also think the Levante as well. Something to do with the transition to the four cylinder engines which are a higher specific output. Still nothing silly mind when you think of what Merc does with small engines.

I would argue the toss based on experience that modern service intervals are absolutely nuts. A turbo charged car with relatively high output, running very tight tolerances, at high temperatures and thin oils for emissions/economy is a recipe for disaster down the line. Zep has given you the VW Group I would add BMW to the list as well as MB and a few others.

No oil, no matter how you drive will survive more than 7k miles of the above conditions before it ain’t doing its job properly. Granted, if you have bought the car new and you will replace it in 3yrs, you will be fine. As the 3d owner at 50k miles - Good Luck to you…

I always thought the fleet market had a large impact on service intervals, it's what the VW service manager told me. Can't see many fleet buyers looking at the Grecale, so perhaps it's a fair indication based on usage etc.

<buys X5M from BMW as approved used car with one previous owner on 37k miles>
<runs the car adhering to the service schedule stipulated by BMW religiously>
<engine seizes at 77k miles>
<BMW coughs up £32k under warranty and a new long block is installed>
<a good friend is the Master Tech for London's biggest BMW dealer - he is unapologetic in his assesment that long service intervals kill engines>
