Eberhard, is Maserati ownership big in Germany? I'd imagine that classic BMW or Mercedes forum would be have more members and there be better run.
Like Phil says its mainly down to those that run the forum and those that are willing to spare the time to organise events such as the great job Matt, Rob and Drew did.

1200+ registered members in the Erdmann Forum. Only a handful made it to Modena, many weren't interested due to "official" packages and their price level. Couldn't be convinced that having fun is possible apart from the official things. I was wavin the flag for events Drew had offered to us but they wanted to stick to their own party. Mostly the reason why I'm active here now.

Best, Eberhard

Maser Club Autumn Meeting in Mid Wales

Just come back from a Maser Club weekend in mid Wales. Absolutely brilliant. The driving was fantastic - best I have ever done. I can see why the car mags do their testing in Wales. The scenery was stunning and it was just great being surrounded by about 40 Masers ranging from the rare and classic to the slightly more humble (like mine). Mrs Petbri had a great time too and I even got her to do some of the driving. After 10 mins or so she was flooring it and swearing out loud just like I do!

As new members, I have to say the other members could not have been more welcoming and friendly to us - and what an interesting bunch they are. No standard stereotype at all. I'm looking forward to meeting them again sometime.
Great to meet you Devonpaul and Ann, I hope you had a good trip back. Not sure if there were any other Forum members there? A massive thanks to Peter Kelville for trusting me to drive his immaculate 1976 bright yellow Bora - it made my weekend as the Bora one of my fantasy cars since my Top Trumps days in the 70's. I'll borrow it for bit longer next time Peter!

A truly great weekend.

I had/have my own preconceptions re the club. Met one of the clubs chiefs at the HR Owen event and he was incredibly welcoming and polite...made me reconsider my initial thoughts of the club...and they do have some interesting cars.

Was considering forking over for a membership, but with SM and all the other meetings over the summer I thought it would just be paying for the newsletter / magazine as I would struggle to go to anything else.

This was my first MC meeting since signing up at Silverstone, and as Peter said, everyone was very welcoming. There is a huge range of people there, and all were polite and friendly and the vast majority very welcoming. Like any club, three are the 'old hands' that have known each other for years, but the club rule of not sitting with the same people for 2 meals means you get to meet a wider range and stops it getting cliquey.

There's also a wide range of people - obviously there's going to be some seriously wealthy folk at events like these, but also quite a few for whom the car is a real indulgence. The way the club ran this event (everything is paid up front, food, wine, the lot, you just add petrol) is designed to take this in to account and means that there's no awkwardness about ordering wine or buying drinks or the like.

Like any large group (there were about 80 at this weekend), there are always some people you get on with better than others, and some people you warm to more than others, but there were plenty of people there who I'd be happy to spend a weekend with again. As newcomers we never felt ignored or were left standing by ourselves in a corner. There is definately an age demographic in the club, something of which they are aware, and I think a lot of members go out of their way to welcome the new members and the youger element, as they know that is where the future of the club lies. Admittedly I was worried at first that I was the only person there that wasn't a member of Saga, but the number of non-pensioners was probably actually into double figures ;)

For the price of half a tank of fuel it has to be worth signing up, and then going to one event just to see if it is for you or not.

My thoughts too, one the kids are older i will join as it looks like they do some pretty special trip to hotels etc... which with kids is nye on impossible.

You know what, when I went to Modena I was worried I'd be the youngest and most immature at 37. There were lots of Grey haired folk but people like Robert and Benny soon showed me that older age has absolutely nothing to do with how juvenile one can be! :D

We had a top laugh and the people there were what made it. Not one person I met was annoying, rude or not up for a laugh. Top lot and I bet that the Maser UK club are the same too!

As newcomers we never felt ignored or were left standing by ourselves in a corner.

This was exactly our experience when the two of us joined the Maser folks from the UK at Modena. And the exact opposite of how we were treated normally in a German "exclusive" Club.

For the price of half a tank of fuel it has to be worth signing up, and then going to one event just to see if it is for you or not.

Also here we have to spend a lot more what makes one think twice while offerings are not exactly the same as at Maserati Club UK ;)

Do they accept Germans as well? (jus'kidding)

Maserati Club UK certainly accept subscriptions and members from overseas. Costs slightly more per annum to cover the increased postage costs for the magazines.

It seems a little like AROC UK,Its clicky, if your face fits and you have the right car you're in..
otherwise its just the by monthly mag and the boondocks!

I didn't think it was cliquey at all - and about half the cars there were circa £20k vehicles, 3200s, 4200s, older QPs, so no worries about not having the "right car". Those with the more collectible ones were only too happy to chat about them and let you clamber all over them (never thought of asking for a go in one though - more fool me).

Obviously there were people there who've known each other for 20+ years and meet regularly, but no matter what sort of event you go to if you get into any crowd like that you're going to be a little 'out of the loop', but we just never found ourselves in that situation.

We generally sat with 4-6 different people every mealtime (including brekkie and the Fri lunch at the Morgan factory), so met over 30 new faces, and there were always people at the table who we found friendly, interesting, and easy to talk to.

The major review of the Modena gathering will be in the glossy club mag "Trident", rather than the little monthly newsletter. I think 21 club cars went on the official tour/event.

I'll be manning the club stand at the NEC on the Friday, so if any forumites plan to attend, do please come and say hello.

I manned the stand a few years ago and had a great time. Will be dropping by on Friday with a couple of friends so will definitely come and say hello. I'm the old bugger with the long grey hair!
