Maserati and Jerremy Clarkson

Since it's birth a few weeks ago, there have been many posts here on Sportsmaserati relating to the Granturismo, more especially the Granturismo S, and I think it would be fair to say that the uprated S has become the weapon of choice on many member's wish lists.

We all know that the basic Granturismo, which whilst having ample power for Joe Average, falls a little short of expectations for the thrill seekers amongst us, although it has to be said that even this is no slouch.

When the Granturismo was announced it was hailed amongst the majority of the world's motoring press as being one of the most beautiful sports coupes in the world, if a little underpowered ..........then along comes Jerremy Clarkson who defies the opinion of the majority by referring to it as pig ugly.

Maserati answered it's critics on the power of the Granturismo by releasing the S version upping the power and making the car more hard core in much the same way as the the 4200 coupe was uprated to the Gransport. Yes, it would be nice to have even more power than even the S affords, but Fiat will never allow the Maserati to lock horns with Ferrari in the performance stakes, which it would if it became much faster.

Jerremy Clarkson continues his anti Maserati campaign today in the Sunday Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/jeremy_clarkson/article7068186.ece with a review of the Granturismo S which he still slams as being underpowered, poor handling and ugly. This is even despite the fabulous review from his Top Gear counterparts in Australia.

Now I know all this makes good television and reading, but like it or not I would reckon that Clarkson's opinion carries a lot of weight when Joe Public is deciding where to spend their hard earned cash.

Why do Maserati continue to give their creations to this muppet for testing???? :frusty6:

Well, we all know he can be a tit, but look for the positives. Joe average listen to the likes of JC and this means that a lot of people looking for a car that the GTS fits the bill, will dismiss it.

This will cause used prices to fall and the marque free of those drivers who usually drive German, especially the Range Rover brigade. My mate looked at one, nearly bought it, he has a Range Rover and in the end was unsure about how the cars value would hold and how reliable it would be....so he did not buy it, I am pleased to say. It will keep a little of the Maser exclusivity that we all love and make them fall into our price range quicker.

JC we thank you

I like reading JC's articles in The Times. I like his style of writing. However, when in the market for something like a Maserati, he would be the last person i'd take any advice from!

I am a big fan of JC but he really does seem to have a blind spot on Maserati and the article is pretty brutal. But, as said above, every cloud has a silver lining. I do think though that in this case JC does risk his reputation a tad as the number of people who think the car ugly will be very, very, few indeed.

We have been here before , many times with Jeremy, and he loves it , its the reason he does it , he's an entertainer end of , and a very good one , is he a good driver far from it and he would be the first to admit it , oh he can pull the odd wheel spin in someones car that he doesn't respect and hasn't got to pay the repair bills for but then we could all do that, So another scathing attack on Maserati similar to one he did on the early 4200 , from my own personal experience there are many many contented 4200 owners out there that can drive their cars without the Jeremy Clarkson headrock so really guys dont bite there's no need to what does he know about cars Zilch Compare it to what bankers know about investment , and what Gordon Brown knows about running the country yep you got it Zilch they have got it wrong and made a big mistake just like Jeremy

I don't think you can call someone who can pay £100k or so for a car, Joe Average. Hence, don't think any prospective buyers will pay too much attention to old cranky JC.

Don't dismiss him as many of his Maserati comments over the years have been reasonable. The GT is not as fast as some would like with either engine, my 4200GT rolls more than I would like, the GT is bigger and heavier than it needs to be, Ferrari keeping a lid on Maserati performance just like the Boxster/Cayman vs 911 story etc etc.

I would hope that this might push prices down as I feel used prices for the GT are very high when I can buy a new loaded S5 for £10-15k less than a near three year old 4.2 GT - both cars have similar power to weight ratios BTW and 4.2 V8s - and at least I can have a manual S5 if I choose.

I'm sticking in my 4200GT for another 6-24 months until the GT is more reasonably priced but I do wish it was 200mm shorter and 200kg lighter.

PS He said the car is 1.8 tonnes when it is actually 1.9 tonnes wet so its 'worse' than suggested.

PPS Can anyone shed any light on the comment about the autobox being behind the engine whereas the CC is at the rear axle?

I've not driven it, but more than likely Clarkson is right, either that or he's just as disillusioned with the brand as I am.

I don't think the auto is the fastest transmission. I am hoping to drive a Granturismo S on Saturday at the HR Owen open day so will report back, but on paper Clarkson is talking out of his *** and totally misses the raison d'etre of Maserati. They were never designed to be road racers........more a thoroughbred high performance trans continental express (with the exception of the MC12). 180 mph plus and 0 to 60 in around 5 secs is plenty fast enough for that purpose. For those who want a bit more bass to acompany their gorgeous V8 they will add on their fancy exhaust and for those who want 0 to 60 sub 4 seconds go buy a Ferrari or Lambo :)

Difficult one this, as he didn't actually dis the Merak, indeed from memory, he was bigging it up. As for what he did? the usual Top Gear shenanigans that don't actually mean anything, much like his ST column!

But he did drive it until it exploded, any sane person would have taken it to a garage.

But wasn't this the car that had just had £7000 spent on the engine......plus there was an invoice for the Super SS badge or something which meant it had an extra 50 bhp......;)....none of those cars were even mediocre specimens, they all needed 30Ks worth of rebuilds plus body work.........soooooooooooo......?!

Parisien,
its not just about the money.. as we all know driving these very heavily depriciating cars! I used to have pictures of cars like the merak on my bedroom wall. to see someone claiming to be a motoring journalist carry on driving a car with no oil pressure for several miles unitil it seizes, is neither funny or clever. That car propably didnt have any "value" but I bet it had plenty of life in it before he blew it up. I was watching him last night comparing the lamborghini gallardo with a Mitsubishi evo for pits sake. whilst he was quoting all kinds of numbers, he missed the point completly. Its like comparing two women with big tits, slim waste, lovely buttocks and long legs without looking at the face and indeed the whole package! no offence to possible forum members that fit this description and if they do exist, can you PM me with your phone number!
