Difficult conditions, but you would certainly have felt that one. Probably a 6-7/10 as everyone walked away. As you walk past the flight deck on the way out after a landing like that, just ask the pilots "was that a landing or were we shot down?". It always goes down well!

'All landings are controlled crashes'
'Any landing you can walk away from is a good one'

Or "please thank the autopilot"

Viewed like that, it looks like someone is lowering the plane vertically, shows how well controlled these things are.

It was a scary one, pretty hard too, amazing the abuse the landing gear takes.........a few stiff brandies consumer in bar by passengers after that one

Ha!

Has anyone actually said something like that or similar to you?

I remember chatting to a passenger once who was on the BA 777 which came down short of the runway after that fuel gelling issue a few years ago. He described the sudden drop out of the air and how he shattered a few teeth as the plane came down and lost part of its landing gear. One to forget in a hurry that.

The thing is I often try to fly BA simply because I am under the illusion that they will have the best pilots who can land in all conditions and won't be silly under pressure. The reality is that all pilots are good (in the main) and even flying budget airlines you are still safer than being in the hands of the local taxi drivers who thinks he is Michael Schumacher when he runs you to the hotel at the destination. It is my understanding that a large majority of plane crashes are actually pilot error anyway!

I fly on the basis that *most* pilots are good, and certainly more competent than I. At least those on the 1st world airlines.

In reality, people go to BA because they are good payers. I know of pilots who have been 'helped on their way' to BA because my company, for various reasons, didn't want to employ them any more. The BA selection is HR driven and very tedious and relies on applicants ticking the right boxes and knowing what to say at the interviews. As a result, those selected are not always the best pilots. As a rule of thumb, British trained pilots are, generally, very good and are sought after by many other National carriers.

Yep as I said I didn't want to be under any illusion that BA had the best pilots. I've spoken to many pilots in many bars in various hotels around the World and they are generally really intelligent and friendly people regardless of carrier. I fly BA mainly because there are not many other flights from LHR to the various destinations which I visit and also I find their times alot more flexible than other carriers on the same route.

In that case, I must be the exception that proves the rule! If BA works for you then, of course, use them; professionally, they are on a par with anything else out there and better than a lot of them.
