Low miles E39

I know of a very low miles E39 coming up for sale, 2002 (so one of the late ones) 520iSE auto in dolphin grey. I believe 1 owner from new, just 22k miles. Even 520’s were still straight 6 of course in this era which is nice!

Tricky to value I guess, could make a very nice ‘modern classic’ daily runabout.

Not seen it, but I’m assuming very good condition, always garaged, done very little miles in recent years I think, still MOT’d every year though.

Any E39 gurus with an idea on value?

No way I am a guru. I have recently sold E39 728iL M sport and was hardly flooded with enquiries. Personally I reckon prices will start rising. Do we still have @Nayf as modern classic bona fide expert.

Few grand ? Unless it is really special OR finds a proper enthusiast.

I think the 7 series of this era was an E38? Nice though.
I guess, ignoring the M5, most people want the 525/530 M sport E39’s. Having said that none of them are fast by modern standards anyway, so as long as you have a nice straight 6 it’s perfectly fine to cruise about in I’d say, outright performance not really an issue.

Unfortunately that’s about as undesirable as you get with e39s (2.0L, auto, SE). You’ve got to really want a low mileage one. Maybe £4.5k. But I wouldnt pay half that.

I think the 520 of that era is a 2.2 straight 6 with 170bhp. Not too bad I’d say, a 4 cyl 518 not so desirable.

It’s is a six (every non M BMW of 2L and over was a six up until the mid 2000s). Problem is they’re something like 50lbft down on the 2.5. I wouldn’t buy a e39 520.

Maybe it’s worth 7k ish then to someone, depending on actual spec/condition of course, based on the 525 and the 2 520’s you posted.

I’d be surprised if the owners of this one missed the 50lb/ft of torque, they are my mates parents and must be near 90 now, I doubt it’s ever seen 4000rpm in its life!

Old Colonel Cars is one of the specialists for low mile BMWs. I think they have a previously sold page. Might be worth a gander.

That’s actually the problem with them compared with the 525. If you rev the nuts of a 520 they move along nicely but in gear acceleration is where you notice the difference. It was a criticism of the new M50 of all capacities compared with the M20 and why they introduced Vanos.

There’s some nice stuff on there. Quite a few E30 325i sports. Which i still had mine now, they’ve shot up in value.

This is the sort of thing we would retail at Classic Modern Cars. Colour and trim is important as well as of course overall condition, tyres, wheels etc but we would probably look to buy this in at £3K. Got offered one trade the other day similar miles for £2K BUT it had only had two services and needed paint to both bumpers and one jacking point repair so we passed. If the above car turns out to be not for you and can be bought around the £3K number then we would be interested. This is a £6K retail car (maybe £7K at a push) but I bet it will need £2K spent on it to get it to retail standard. Just my opinion. Look for rust despite the low miles.

I’m not looking to buy it, just getting an idea of value for my mate who’s parents are needing to move it on. Having said that it would be a great car just to use as a runabout…..
Of course condition and history is paramount to value, as we can see from the 15k 530SE auto posted above!

if in condition commensurate with the low mileage and one owner motor then stick it in an auction as could fetch far more than expected otherwise will just get dealers/traders trying to low ball and/or wasters
