Hi,

I'm new to the forum as I just got myself a 3200 manual which I should be picking up in a couple of months.

The car is currently being prepped (new cam belt, etc) and while it is up on the ramp I wanted to get some decent stainless rear back boxes to replace the OEM ones and after doing as much research as possible online, and speaking to some people in the know, Larini have been highly recommended by a lot of people.

However, if I can though, I would quite like to be able to hear what they sound like before I fork out the money for a new set. I know someone with a set of RPi's and I quite liked the sound of those, but I want to know how much better the Larinis actually are and whether they justify the price tag. Also the Larini's definitely look the business out of all the backboxes I have seen.

I was just wondering whether there is anyone on the forums that has a 3200 that lives around the Nottingham/Leicester/Derby area with the Larini back boxes fitted with an OEM mid section that wouldn't mind if I popped over to see what they sound like one evening?

Might be wishful thinking, but if you don't ask you never know.

Thanks in advance,

Dave.

Welcome Dave. Congrats on the car and great choice on the manual! It's a bit of a chore in stop start but on the open road it is very rewarding. As for the exhaust I know a few on here have RPI, Quicksilver and Larini's so I'm sure someone will be able to give you a nice demo. Whilst there I would recommend removing the centre cat section too to free up some power and also add to the exhaust note. It will still pass emissions with the precats on downpipes.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the welcome.

I took a 2000 manual out for a spin and it was brilliant to drive, I literally couldn't stop grinning, the turbos are additive and I couldn't get enough of them. Like I said the car I drove had the RPI exhaust which sounded decent enough, but the idea of having something that sounds even better is very appealing, which is why I am edging towards the Larini.

I'm aware of the end float bearing issue with the manuals, but it doesn't scare me enough not to have bought one. I wanted something to replace my 350z and I had narrowed it down to either the Maserati 3200, Porsche 996 or a TVR Tuscan, all of which have their own associated horror stories. The gearing of the 350z isn't great in the lower gears and the gearbox is relatively clunky, so the Maserati didn't really feel too bad in comparison in all fairness. I had no issues with it at all.

I was just going to keep everything bar the back boxes standard as I didn't want to mess around with the system too much and although I want the tone of the exhaust to sound decent and throaty I don't want it to sound too excessive, especially on long journeys. When I bought my first car (a mk2 Golf GTI), it had a Magnex exhaust fitted and the droning really started to grate on me and kind of put me off loud exhausts. In the end I just swapped it out for an OEM, but a half way house would have been nice.

I am pretty sure I will end up getting the Larini anyway, as I reckon I will only end up wishing I had gone for the Larini if I get the RPI. But it would still be nice to hear one in person to see whether the difference in sound is really that noticeable.

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi Dave,

I just bought a 3200 a few weeks back with Larini back boxes. I may well be looking to sell them, so if you're interested please PM me. Reason for selling them is that they're a bit loud for my tastes, and much too loud for my wife! Although several (male) strangers have complimented me on the sound :). They're deep and burbly, a bit boomy around 40mph but fine at motorway speed.

If the music is too loud - then you're too old!
A V8 should sound like a V8 - never been a fan of American pig iron blocks but they have a philosophy of cubic inches = horsepower and noise, can't say I disagree

Yes, before Benny adds his comments, the turbos do mute the sound -and his sounds spectacular!

Best comments on mine was a slightly flat battery that sort of spooled up before firing

Thing is the 3200 sounds different a deeper V8 burble whereas the highly modded 4200's are screamier and higher pitched.

My neighbours always look a bit bleary eyed on Wednesday mornings - I wonder if this has anything to do with me coming home late on Tuesday (or early Wednesday) and reversing the length of the drive in between the house and fence into a garage.
Oh well - they can always get double Glasing

you can try this guys near you. I am tempted to get straight pipes for my 4200

http://www.mijexhaust.com/mij-exhaust-system.html

they fit a lot of sport exhausts on any car. they are the cheapest although on the Internet you can find some complaints because their exhaust are too noisy!!!

I've used MIJ Performance in Walsal in the past (quite a long time ago now). Personally, having had one of their custom exhausts on a previous vehicle, I wouldn't want one fitted to my Maserati...

Their exhausts might be spot on for some people and there were loads of heavily modded cars when I went to visit, but what I ended up with was just way too 'fast and furious' for my own personal taste. I could hear my girlfriend coming back from work from about 3-4 roads away and that was just with a "mid-sport" system fitted...

Sorry for hijacking this thread - thanks to all of you who have enquired about the very popular Larinis! My 3200 is going in to the Maserati Shed this week for a service, and I'll discuss his stainless back boxes then. So I'll update everyone when I know how long it will be for me to get replacements, and when I can part with the Larinis.
