Its a £7k trailer. It was stolen and recovered by the police. The police followed process and tried to trace the owner. The owner could not be found so the trailer was auctioned. We purchased the trailer, it needed a lot of work so we spend hundreds of pounds on new parts, days working on it and when it was fit to be used, we re-advertised it for sale. The previous owners contacted us and said 'that is our trailer, you are selling stolen goods'. Yesterday morning, I contacted a solicitor who agreed the police were legally allowed to sell the trailer and the trailer was now legally owned by us. Yesterday lunch-time, the police raised a case against us, interviewed me, confirmed we rightfully own the trailer and subsequently closed the case, all in the space of a few hours. The previous owner is obviously not happy, threatening to tell everyone the trailer is not ours to sell and we are handling stolen property
Meanwhile, we have put a lot of time and money into the trailer and are not prepared to lose both time and money and give our legally owned trailer away to someone to did not insure it nor appear to contact any authorities when it was stolen over a year ago. I have been informed that they are legally entitled to the money we paid to the police for the trailer which was thousands of pounds. They don't want that, they want the trailer back but don't seem to realise that that does not work for us, the innocent party who will lose a lot of money through no fault of our own None of the 'please contact the police' replies seem to be working. I am now comfortable that the vehicle is legally ours now though so am much happier Thanks for your help, appreciated. Looking for a Landy now, anyone got one for sale???
