It's amazing how a car can be brand new when it was launched at a motor show a year ago.

Good night last night. Lovely Ghibli (original) on display together with usual Ferraris & Maseratis in the dealership.

Must say Ghibli makes Quattroporte look VERY pricey.

The two side by side - one at £58k and one at £115k. Similar switchgear, centre armrest, interior "feel". Difficult for non-enthusiast to tell one from t'other (unless side by side). Either Ghibli is a bargain or QP overpriced. Just my opinion after seeing them together.

I find it hard to believe they'd have gotten it so wrong.....price wise and size....

Yeah, it's a strange one. When every Maserati in the range carried a high price tag, you at least felt you were entering into a world of exclusivity.

The cheaper price tag of the Ghibli can easily make a person start thinking about Value For Money in the face of the competition in the premium executive saloon market niche. In my view, Maserati are playing with fire in that regard. Stay exclusive, and you keep the breed pure. Enter the mass market, and the brand sheds some of its mistique.

Alfa Romeo pursued a new direction around 10-12 ago, and lost some of its character as a result. Luckily, the prettiness of the designs allowed the marque to keep its head above water. It will be interesting to see whether Alfa can build on the renewed interest generated by the 4C.

Thing is its the £63k Ghibli which compares with the £80k QP. Spec for spec the difference is about £10k which is not silly going from an 'E class to an S class'.

Neither really suit the UK IMHO, both are poor designs and are very weak efforts in an increasingly competitive market. Personally I feel that the QP is the better looker as the Ghibli boot is a mess and the front grill is the wrong way up just to distinguish it from the QP. Real shame and missed opportunity with both.

It's a good job we are all different Bob. I think the Ghibli is a good, solid euro-type design that looks good in the metal and is different enough from the typical German offerings to make it attractive to new buyers. Time will tell which of us is right.

You are right it is different enough in the round but then I look at my GranTurismo where half the appeal is the design and I wonder what Maserati are doing.

But the same can be said for lovers of the biturbo! I must admit the GT is not my favourite design out of recent cars but I still acknowledge its place in the market. I don't understand what there is not to like about the ghibli...

I agree with you Phil, apart from the bit about the BiTurbo! From some angles the GT looks a bit awkward to me and the Mondeo lights don't help the look either. However, it is different and generally good looking enough to be interesting but it didn't sell in big enough numbers and the Ghibli is out to address that.

The other issue with the Ghibli is you can't just turn up, spec up a car, and expect to see it within 3-4 weeks. You have to fall within an 'allocation'. I lost a lot of enthusiasm for the Ghibli after expressing a strong interest last August, and then eventually being told that I wouldn't see one until March of this year.

Having said that, it's sobered me up nicely for the similar wait on my 4C!
