Just for fun... can anyone beat this milage for a 16 year old 3200GT!

daft question does this endfloat issue affect any specific era of cars or all of them from 98 to 02, ? dave

All of them as I have seen them go in the early cars and mine was a late Assetto Corsa so it is a fundamental design problem which was never rectified by the factory when the models were in production, it was only addressed afterwards

Does anyone know how to measure the crankshaft end float? I asked my main dealer to measure it, but they said that it is only possible when you overhaul the engine. I have read that some specialist can measure it easily.

They are not much of a specialist then! A dial gauge against the pulley face, and pry the engine forward and back. Nothing hard about it. There should be no discernible movement to you, and I think the figure is no greater than 0.2mm if memory is correct.

Thank you for your answer. Then, the measurement can be done while the engine is mounted on the chassis, right?

Is the access to the crankshaft front pulley easy? Can it be accessed from the hood? Or can it only be accessed from the bottom of the vehicle?

Yes it can be done in situ, mine is done each year when it's serviced. I would think you would need to do it from underneath, it may also be possible to do it from the flywheel at the inspection port at the clutch, also from underneath.

I had an interesting conversation with a respected Maserati engineer about this very subject earlier this week.

Put it this way, as the owner of a high-ish mileage manual 3200 I'm sleeping much more soundly than I was when I first came across this thread...

Seems to be luck of the draw. I did quite big mileages in both of my manual 3200's and both were fine. Others have been not so lucky. A bit like the much mentioned IMS/RMS issues on 996/997 Porsches. They are not all effected, but if it happens to you, that's of scant consolation.

should pushing the clutch fully down, then off, also show any deflection in a dial gauge that motion also loads the crank pulley up? people have said a drop of oil pressure is noticeable when endfloat is present when engine running

It shouldn't show more than 0.2mm It takes a lot more than this to notice a drop in oil pressure. Some have noticed it others not. I would say that if you do notice it then it's pretty terminal.

Once the washers wear down to the copper backing the crank rocks back and forth so much so it then starts to wear the outer edges of the big end bearings..

This is when you start seeing oil pressure fluctuations, It's pretty dire by then..

But if you catch it quick enough and can find the correct size replacement bearings, It's still fixable ;)

No chance Phil she has only done 7,500 miles on a new 1500 pounds oil pump I fitted before I left Blighty and she is going well down here.
