I've learnt money spent on a good employee is money well spent. If it is the right one I don't mind offering top dollar. The company reap the benefits. Anyone trying to employ someone on the cheap for an important role is making false economies.

Exactly my point, in post 20 I alluded to the overspend on cable on last project, saving them that 50k would nearly have paid for me but they just don't see it!!!
Penny wise, pound daft!!!!

Hi Dave,

I always found the petrochem industry very stingy when it came to pay, unless you where offshore or in Aberdeen. I use to work for a valve company, invented new products for them which made them millions more each year. They wouldn't even consider giving me a pay rise at the annual review. So I handed my notice in, next day they offered me a 40% pay increase. It was too little too late by that point, as my new job payed double. Leaving that industry was the best thing I ever did! I now design supercars!

Are you a design or mechanical engineer? are your skills transferable to a different industry? Do you know any CAD software?

Hi Liam,
By trade I guess I am a bit of a hybrid as I have qualifications over a few engineering disciplines, done little design and have no CAD experience. Super cars - Oh I wish !!!

Anyway, I have just had a call and I should get a revised offer tomorrow and guess what, I will actually get a £1.13 an hour pay rise on my current rate, which isn't really important, more the moral victory in my mind.
Apparently HR got "confused" and thought they were offering me a role as a shop floor supervisor, not as the guy responsible for delivering the project !!!
Hey ho.....best I write my resignation letter,

Looking forward to another challenge in a different environment and part of the industry.....

lol- cant change the car registrations now, Ho-Yin.. (Unless you want to go in the Fiat 500)

Its only £1.13 an hr extra.....not a Maserati extra - time to start saving hard, Contigo mentioned finance the other day, but gives me a rash thinking about it!!!

Its not quite in the bag but nearly there!!!

Ditto. I can't bring myself to finance.

If I can't buy with cash I don't buy anything (a part from property).

Was semi serious, actually. It should be something one does with all one's people. I have always found that by the time someone's gone through another recruitment process, negotiations and then the emotional stance of handing in the notice that any offer to make them stay is probably a stop gap at best. That boat sailed the day they seriously started job hunting, or answered the phone to the head hunter that had an interesting offer.

Staff retention is a day to day thing. Some are harder than others to keep. I'm very happy that I've lost no-one for about 18 months (team of about 30+). Of course now it's tending to the point where low churns is actually counter productive....

Totally agree,
I wasn't really looking, then like buses, 3 come along, 2 with previous employers.
He is an ex squaddie as well, so I just pointed out, I had committed and my moral compass meant I wouldn't play one of against the other. Not very professional!!
Have given 3 weeks notice with 3/4 days handover as off for 2 weeks now, only had to give 1 week..

Cheers Dean & Ho-yin,
Maserati, who knows, would like to and have an ember gently glowing, but if that does not come to fruition then ???
And I think I am going to be uber busy until September, I see a lot of late nights and weekends which =£ but perhaps no free time, I would love to commit to the forum Spain jaunt but just can't, and the missus may not get off, or I could go as a passenger I guess....... but if we have not delivered the modules I will have no chance!!!!!!
