Hi Guys,

It looks like its clutch time, i just bought the car and I knew the clutch was nearly worn out..
But i was hoping it would last a while... but it didnt.. Se La Vi

Anyway Im looking around at what my options are.

I've noticed that Sachs who make the original clutch, also make a "performance" clutch.
According to them it can handle upto 15% more torque than the standard.

Has anyone used it? Is it any good?
Or are there any other options? And where is the best place to get it done?

Cheers,
Dan

My spyder runs a standard half-worn clutch and I've got 20% more power and about 17% more torque than standard and it's still not slipping. If it's a lot more money think hard, because if yours hasn't been chipped etc, IMO there probably isn't a great need for one.

If I were you I would stick with OE, but that's just my personal choice rather than being based on any evidence on clutch performance. Eurocarparts stock Sachs kits and were cheaper than Eurospares by some margin when I did mine, but are now pretty much matched; I think Eurospares may have dropped their price though it could be that Eurocarparts increased theirs a bit too! However, Eurocarparts include delivery and it's fairly easy to get them to drop 10% or more off the price, just by asking. You could also email Alan Clark (Dick Lovetts) though this forum.

In terms of getting it fitted, it needs to be a specialist, so it depends who is close to you that's recommended.

I seem to remember someone had a contact in spain for the clutch parts really cheap, think it was about £300 for the complete set.

Agreed with the above comments, get it only done my a specialist, I had mine done by the local Porker garage and it slipped after about a thousand miles and it had to be done again as they adjusted it wrong and it knackered it.

I would stick with the standard unit unless your car has been modified. There are couple of specialsts in Hertfordshire, Bill McGrath Maserati in Kimpton 01438 832161 and SB Race Engineering in Hemel Hempstead 01442 833354, SB advertise the cost on the web at £680 plus parts plus vat. I would give both a call to confirm the cost.

I changed mine about 15k ago only because the release bearing tag broke off and had to be replaced. There were no aftermarket options at the time but I managed to get a original complete kit for £500+vat. I did it myself as its not difficult BUT you do need to know what you are doing. There is some data for adjustment required which if you need, I have the manual. As for a specialist, always better but any decent independent garage should be able to do if they are given the set up data required. I agree with Rex, unless you have made any serious mods, the standard clutch is more than enough.

Out of curiosity how many miles have you done?

Cheers

I think my clutch is the original and the car has now done 49k and I was told at last service that it was still OK. I think that the life of the clutch very much depends on how the car is driven, If you like to spin the wheels from the lights, and junctions then it might be worth the extra £ 350 for the uprate clutch. Whatever you decid its also worth changing the spigot bearing inside the flywheel its only around £15-00. I can also assist if you need any information from the manual.

Had mine doen at 66k, no evidence it was changed before i acquired car at 32k. Only changed because the release bearing bracket tore off.
Got second hand clutch off ebay :)gasp:) which turned out to be as new.
Fitting at a specialist OR trusted mechanic OR your own well equipped shop.

Often heat needed to undo exhaust parts. On mine the pipes to one turbo were "difficult" to get out and this added 2-3 hours. Imagine how long that would have taken me, when proper experts struggled for that long. Think hard before immobilising your car at home.

If you want to buy the uprated clutch there is a company on ebay in Germany sells a chip to uprate the Power to 420 HP with lots more torque as well , at least then you can justify the extra expense. With an uprated chip and sports CAT's and system it might be possible to get 440HP. Has anyone on this forum uprated thier 3200?

Hi Rex,

do not know of anyone who has had upgrade done - with 440 Bhp and the turbo kick it must make the car an absolute monster !

There was a comparison road test carried out by Evo magazine in Nov 2001 between an Asseto Corsa and a Leo Nardo modified 3200 manual which had 450 HP and it said that in the dry it was possible to spin the wheels in the 3200 in the first three gears. The engine modifications carried out were uprated intercoolers, free flow inlet manifold, sports exhaust, and reprogrammed engine management system. Must have been some car drive.
