Morning

I have had a quote to paint the Murcielago.
Paint Code PPG 0058 Arancio Atlas.
Pearl Orange.

I have been quoted £4200 for paint alone, no labour.

A quick scan on line shows i can get;

1 litre of paint plus thinner for £78

Yes there will be laquer and primer etc but these will be cheaper than the actual paint.

I am struggling to see how they are getting to £4200 for paint alone, how much paint does a large car need ?

Quote in general seem expensive, i will strip the car but they are charging 1 hours labour to paint the door handle, which is a whole 1 inch by 4 inches !!

Thanks

No expert but as with most things, I would say paint jobs unless very bespoke are 80/20 rule (labor/consumables).

But remember if it comes with a bull on the packaging it will be 10X the normal price... rather like Maserati.

Just based on painting one car myself so no expert:

Pearls can be very expensive. Don’t know the paint specs but I’d imagine as it’s a pearl:

Strip, clean and sand.
1 coat sealer
Filler
3-5 coats filler primer
3 coats base colour
3 coats pearl
3 coats clear.

Each of those 5 stages may take 10l of mixed paint apart from the sealer which might be 5l and filler primer which will depend on car condition. Say 55l of mixed paints, which is about what the Vette took, Lambo could be bigger.

Every individual paint application will need stripping, cleaning and masking and there’s a lot of consumables as well as the paint.

1 hour to flat and paint a door handle doesn’t seem unreasonable given the above but it depends how complex a shape it is. Time may also include removal and refitting.

Get another quote.

top coat lacquer is very expensive for the good stuff. Due to the size of the car I would say a gallon and that's the best part of a grand.

Ask for a cost break down of that £4200, as the yellow/orange paint itself won't be anywhere near that. You'll only need a few litres of that, as you've less than 10m2 to paint and the thickness of the coating is considerably less than 1mm (probably only a few hundred microns). I imagine that a 5 litre unit would be ample.

Primer is less expensive per litre, but you're likely to need more of it. Much of what is applied will then be flatted off.

Thinners is even less again. Maybe a few Pounds per litre.

I paid 40 quid for a litre of Blue Nettuno not so long ago from a paint supplier. I don’t know how different the paint you want is.

An SUV is non pearl is suggested at 8 litres. at £93 a litre £744.

Will ask for a breakdown just to see how they are pricing it. The £4200 was just the paint, no labour in that price

Just had a google and a bottom of the range HOK orange pearl is $252 a quart. That’s a two stage not 3 stage so just needs a clear on top not a separate pearl.
