A lot of Dorset companies supplied airport equipment to Bournemouth Airport and the rest of the country and world. It was handy to deliver/collect spares from a local manufacturer, with no import duty to contend with and this was before that madness of 2016.

What happened in 2016 to stop such a brilliant enterprise? :jpbelial:

Part of the ownership thing is Private Equity...it's astonishing how many "brands" are really just names licensed for use, now...and how these firms leverage their way into something, extract all the value, and toss it aside as a business model. "Toys R Us" is just one that springs readily to mind...

Something I realised early on was how Thatcher and consecutive Tory AND labour governments got companies like Nissan, Toyota and Honda to build big factories in the UK using tax incentives and its position in Europe. Much of the taxes were paid by the workforce by income tax and NIs.
The local population have a worthy employer of various levels, the government get a 'win' and the large company get a European base for cheap.
That's a simplistic view but largely true.

Remember when Austin Rover had that tie-up with Honda and they brought out the Triumph Acclaim, it looked so boring after the sports cars Triumph brought out in the 70s. I had a couple of 1.6 Montegos, not a bad car for the period and on one of them remember a timing belt snapped, was a piece of cake to replace, no valves hitting pistons and I was back up and running in a couple of hours.
