On another note, and at the risk of opening up a large vat of worms....

What's the view on standard Auto vs. MC Shift on the GT? Bearing in mind I won't be doing track days etc., just every day / long journey driving.

I'm sure there's a whole thread / section dedicated to this, but I've not found it.

Huge can. Mahoosive. Be prepared. As a daily and longer journeys of maybe stop start. I would say Auto will be your friend. You need to try both though and decide for yourself and also factor clutch change costs too.

As said above drive both. But in general...

If you'll be doing City, town, traffic jams and all that Daily grind - Auto will probably suit best.
If its a weekend toy, or daily A/B road fun and motorway muncher, than an MC-shift will just add that bit more occasion and stir the senses the extra 10%. (and it sounds slightly better too) but you have to factor in a clutch change every 40k miles ish.

If your set on a post 2012 GT Sport, than an MC-shift is tough ask though , as there are only 40 odd in the UK.

Try this thread also as it may be of help. Gutted to hear you missed out on the car, but you’ll find another. Is there a particular spec / colour combi you’re after?

Thanks mate. No, not really, I'd be happy with black / black but cream interior with black or blue paint would be the ultimate for me. I'm more keen on lower mileage, #owners and overall condition. And to be honest I'm a bit paranoid about buying a lemon / clone. I guess the more spec the better, but the reality is you buy a GT for its looks, sound and overall experience, not whether the back seats are heated or not.

Next you’ll be asking what colour brake callipers are best…
On a serious note give Richard Grace Cars a call. He’s on here, knows how to pick great cars and is highly recommended. I think he sources and sells a lot of cars that never get to go on his website, so worth a call. He sold my previous GT for me so I know what he checks before he will sell it to another customer (I would say no need for an independent inspection for example as he effectively does that for you), and that takes the risk and worry out of finding a car.

This is good advice. Richard was a great help to me in sourcing a car, very honest, accurate and fast comms.

seems you have the budget for the later car so all out inevitable you'll find an auto. The later auto box does mimic the mc-shift pretty well by all accounts.
If there were only 40 of the 'proper mc-shift' then you need to be proper fan to wait for one.
The colour outside and in might be your decision point. Who really cares what optional extras exist when you have that noise and view. (is there a poverty-spec GT?)

To be honest when I saw the pics with a bit of rust and the tainted alu I would have walked away - it took me two or three tries to find the right car as well - patience is always rewarded..walking away is hard but sometimes necessary

Surely everyone knows the best already!

The dealer is in Essex. But where did the owner live?
I live literally a few yards from the sea. But I keep my cars
well inland and well covered in a small warehouse.
Corrosion is minimal. If any.
However, if you let a car sit in the elements and especially
on the coast. It will show surface rust very quickly.
That may be what occurred with this vehicle.
Gawd. I just checked and I joined here almost five years ago.
Time flies, sadly. However, in all that time, I can hardly
recall any lemons being mentioned here.
There has been the odd car that was so badly abused that
only a brave mechanic would take it on. But, those cars
were rare and very obviously best avoided.
I don't believe that Maserati made m/any GT lemons.
Given the folklore about variators and IMS bearings etc etc
you'd hear, if there were many lemons in circulation.
Like everybody has suggested. When you want to make an
offer on a car. Make it contingent on a satisfactory inspection
outcome and only take the car to a mechanic recommended
here, that we have personal knowledge of.
As others have said. The inspection will throw up items that
may need changing in a year or two. Especially if its your daily
driver. And you can easily price your likely expenditure for
your first couple of years. My advice. Treat it the best you can
and the car will reciprocate.
Welcome. Good luck and happy hunting! :)
Oh and the blue car pictured, looked gorgeous!

Thank you, I’d not considered Sofisticato Blu as I was originally leaning towards black and dark greys, with my favourite Grigio Alfieri. But this came up out of the blue (haha!) and it was impossible to resist. Relatively low miles with a superb service and care history and in great condition, made it a no brainier. I still look out for GT’s in Grigio Alfieri coming onto the market but they are rare. The only other temptation away would be a GT Sport in Rosso Magma…..but it’s a waiting game.

I think that I was mooching around on the forum for at least eighteen months before I found my car (pictured).
They aren't so rare that the combination you're seeking won't come around. You're lucky. Being in G.B. These
cars are like rocking horse sh*t over here in N.I. ;)

Orange break calipers?? :)

Thanks for the tip, I'll give him a call. I'm not in a hurry and happy to wait for the right car - will let you know how I get on.

"Poverty spec GT" - love it. Usually the more they take out of a car the more they charge you! Appreciate your input, thank you.

I think you're right, esp. with a car like this, mitigating any kind of risk is key.

Thanks Mike, appreciate your comments. I bought a brand new C63 a few years ago, but this is my first foray into a 2nd hand performance / prestige motor, so am using an abundance of caution. I'm not intending it to be my daily driver, but I wouldn't be surprised if that idea goes right out the window :)
