Home security CCTV camera?

Hi

Just wondered if anyone had a decent CCTV camera that they can recommend?

I only need one camera, that I would like to set up to keep an eye on my car. The car will be parked approx 7-10m from the camera so the camera needs to be a decent definition in order to be worthwhile. Also, I am not sure how good cameras are at night recording without spending a fortune.

The other thing is recording before over-writing, I'd like it to be able to keep recordings of when I go on a 2 week holiday. Maybe a motion activated camera might be best?

Just be keen to hear thoughts. What I am not after though is a multi home camera security system.

Cheers,
Ross

I bought a "kit" from Maplins a couple of years ago.
I was going to buy individual components but I got the kit for less than the DVR on its own.
Came with 2 cameras with night vision and I thought I would try them and change to something better once I saw how they performed.
Tbh they are pretty reasonable. Police needed to view them earlier this year and commented they were impressed with the quality.
Night vision tends to be all or nothing though. I am planning to upgrade and looking at ANPR capable cameras. They have come down in price and improved quality.
Would be handy to actually identify any particular vehicle and they don't get "blinded" by lights coming towards them.
Think the recorder is 500mb (might even be 250mb) and 2 cameras running constantly give well over a month before they re-write themselves.
A single camera on a 1TB system would be plenty in my experience.
Hope this helps.

If you have the make, or even better the make and model, of what you bought, that would be great

Camera from memory was"Swann".
They varied in price from £30 to £100.
I looked for night vision range and the tvl. Higher the tvl better the quality.
Things have improved again so much in last few years.
Some do sound as well as vision but I didn't bother with that.
Might be handy listening to your own car arrive and leave though!! Lol
Will have a look at DVR shortLy to conform spec on that.
Sure there will be others with more experience along to advise.

Look up ring.com they do a fantastic wireless camera for £170 which records sound and motion, also alerts you and saves to cloud it will alert your mobile via an app and you can also speak through the camera to the potential thief!!!! You need wifi but that's it you don't even need power you just charge it every couple of months or buy solar attachment for £30

There's another thread on here regarding cctv cameras, wireless have issues with dropping the signal etc, wired ones are most resilient and not that much different in cost.

Agree to go with hardwired. We run ours through a powerline adaptor with an ethernet cable straight into the router. Only the interior ones are on the wireless.
