High/wavering idle - 3200gt

Morning all,

Took the 3200gt out for a 'good run' on Saturday, and towards the end of the run (and now permanently since) the car seems to idle noticably higher than normal. Not by a lot, but where as normal idle sits just over the 1000rpm mark, it now seems to be much more like 1250-1300rpm, which then requires a lot of brake riding when crawling in traffic. I let it go with no pedal contact whatsoever and it drove up to 30mph and switched up to 2nd (its an auto box) without any acceleration on my part. I also notice that when coming off the power and naturally decelerating, the car starts to kangaroo a little bit before settling.

Final symptom, when moving into either park or neutral, the revs climb even higher - maybe 1400rpm, which as nice as it sounds - its a bugger having to then put it into a drive car as its certainly not what would be considered a smooth change!!

My (VERY) limited technical knowledge- 97% of which was gained from these very forums, lead me to think throttle body - any more mechanically minded people care to share their thoughts? Been thinking about the contactless throttle body upgrade for a while so maybe this will be the final straw, but would appreciate any opinions before making the move.

Thanks in advance! :)

Ben
Dear Sir

I have a dilemma and suspect it is as much about me as it is my confidence in the advice I have received to date. Reading your website gave me a sense that you may be able to assist.

I have owned this 1999 model since 2004 which had done11k mlies at that time..
Early ownership teething problems were related to not starting despite fast engine turning over well. A trickle charge resolved this.
Whilst I tried to keep the vehicle fully maintained due to very lite usage I have not stuck to regular services.
Car has now done 23k miles.

Last year I started getting a high pitched whistling noise in the car cabin when I accelerate quickly up to 3k revs. If I nurse the acceleration I can reduce the intensity of the noise which tails off once the car is past 3k revs .
The performance of the car does not appear to be affected.
When the car is on but not in gear and I rev up to 4k there is no noise.

A local independent mechanic thought it was the brake servo so I had this replaced. Noise still exists.

Another independent local mechanic thinks it could be the Kaiser valve but we cannot source a replacement.

Another independent local mechanic thinks it could be a valve on the brake servo along with a couple of other hose valves.....but there does not appear to be a clear concensus about the solution so I have held off before I go this route.

If you are still reading and can see where I am coming from, and prepared to offer an opinion I am open to any suggestions. I really enjoy the car knowing that it has a reputation for electronic management issues which for the most part I have not been a victim of. That said the'Check Engine' light has been on for many years but given the forum discussions on this subject I have not addressed it.

Any suggestions or ideas would be gratefully received.

Best regards

Maybe try Turin Motors if in Leeds, so if it’s an easy fix with them. They don’t have SD3 or anything tho...

Two things from me. I would repeat the throttle reset a couple of times as it does not always work and you have no way of knowing. Increase the full throttle time to 10 seconds and hold the idle for 2 minutes and 10 seconds, because it is also impossible to know when the ECU clock starts. However I would say my money would be on the TB sticking. From what i gather its better when the car is cold and has been sitting for a while and gets worse when its hot. The TB will heat up and any sticking is likely to be more pronounced when hot. The plenum leaking is also a prime candidate, and can cause similar problems but when my car had the plenum leaking (i think they all do it eventually) it was not heat dependent. good luck with it.
