Thanks Chris. I'm just about to take three years out to retrain as a leadership psychologist, so although I'll be doing the odd bit of consultancy work to top up my income, I don't want to add finance to the mix for this purchase. I know I'm not doing this the smartest way. But, if I can de-risk it sufficiently, I can cover most eventualities out of income, if that makes sense.

It does indeed, it's amazing what you think of when got your heart set on a Maser. Ref to your income, you are indeed playing the smart game there, unless of course you can get a decent personal loan to assist.

Car looks good from the pictures. You like your red interiors don't you!

I don't know where I stand on them. Having once had an Alpina B10 with just red leather stitching in various places, I liked it. With these kind of cars, it seems to go with the territory and I don't find a red interior offensive at all.

I'm just not sure if I could live with it or not.

Guilty as charged ;) But the red and red of that car on eBay was a bit much. Truth be told, I prefer my sports cars, red on the outside.
Apparently all the servicing on this one was done at a main dealer in Belfast, that doesn't have a great reputation so I'm less than thrilled, but we'll see what transpires.

Get it on an MOT ramp and check for uneven tyre wear, play at hubs, tie rods, arms and shock damage. Being heavy cars they eat Tyres and suspension parts very quickly. They are also heavy on brakes so well worth checking. Listen to the car from cold and I mean not started for 24 hours (arrive unexpected) particularly paying attention for any kind of rattle with the bonnet up, this will tell if the variators need doing. Check everything works switches , air con, cruise , xenons, parking sensors. Everything on the car will cost you to fix so make sure you factor it all in!

Cheers Phil. I'm not sure the owner is going to wear a fairly forensic examination, so looks like I'll be taking a pass on this one. I got the impression during our initial contact that he expected his emphasising the FMDSH over the life of the car, ought to be enough to have me throwing blank cheques his way.
But I'm noting everything said here and will put everyone's advice to good use at some point this year. Even if I have to hold off for several months and add a few thousand to my budget.
I think I'm going to talk to both Maserati indies in Belfast. Any car that comes via either of them, so long as they go over it with a fine tooth comb, will be a much better proposition.

I would not buy anything from anyone who tells me the car is the best colour combo even if I agree! Stupid comment that can only **** people off.

I'm also genuinely enthused to know that I don't need to service it for three weeks.

Finally 'daft dealer offers', well that's a wonderful way of telling a nervous private buyer that if you cannot sell it on privately then the trade - in many cases - takes a large margin out of these cars.

Personally I just accept that margins on fancy cars are high and selling privately over a certain price is near impossible. Keep it longer and the dealer margin averages out but buying a GranTurismo new (or even, say, a 911) and wanting rid after two years is always going to cost a lot.

Here's a fun fact. The PIRA used to use American bought M60 machine guns to fire from this ridgeline, down into the city below. Now Maserati's are parked in the same spot. Progress? ;)

wouldnt be surprised if that was him bidding it up and its still for sale

eBay auction isn't the place to be selling this type of car
