GTS overheating

Good to know, Jon. A relief as well, probably. Which year is yours?

It's a 58 plate I bought from Lancaster in October when they told me there was a four month wait for a new one!! Nice low mileage though - still only <17k and looks brand new.

Well looked after they age well. Mine's a 2009, just coming up to 34k and still looks fantastic. It needs its snout blowing over to deal with the stone-chips so will be off to Motts in Great Horkesley for some cosmetic love in the spring.

Faulty sensor..!! If everything works OK, fans come on as normal, no steam, then the sensor, or temp sender has thrown a wobbly, get it replaced..!!

That's pretty much where we got to. Lancaster say it's a known prob on this model year and will sort it Monday.

As an aside though, doesn't the temp sender act as a trigger for the fans? Wouldn't they misbehave too?

Love this forum, BTW! So much useful stuff and so many helpful people. Such a change from the egos on some other sites.

Most cars I ever worked on had separate thermal switches.

No idea if this is the case on the GT, but I wouldn't be at all surprised

Just had a trawl through the parts list. Can't *find* a separate switch, but that doesn't really mean much :)

Jon, mine did this, was the sender. What was actually happening was that when you turned the ignition off, instead of the gauge returning to nil, it sometimes stayed where it was.Consequently, when you restarted the car later ( even a few days later), it was showing as 85/90 degrees, and as it warmed up because it was thinking it was already hot, it climbed higher!
You will find that if you turn the car off, and fire it up again straightaway, the gauge will reset itself and drop to nil for the next journey and save you a heart attack!

It is with Lancaster now (they gave me an Audi A4 as a loaner car - I was hoping for a Ferrari 458, but hey!).

Turns out it was the top hose. Apparently a known failure point although how that causes what I described is beyond me when the coolant level was okay when I checked. Anyway, this guy is the guru so I'll let him work his magic and see what happens. Still in the back of my mind it's the sender and I know this is also a problem on that model but he's done the diagnostics and assures me he's right. I'm just hugely relieved it's nothing more sinister - all under warranty and he will also update the media centre software (a further new software release comes out next week people) and hopefully they'll give her a wash too.

All good!

The software point is interesting as my understanding is that it is the first for quite a long time. I wonder what will change? Hopefully the BT will get better for a start.

Normally you won't notice anything as most cars get software updates when they are in for a service dealing with lots of small points but perhaps Jon can find out?

I will ask Lee Ball when he calls me later.

That said, I suspect Maserati don't tell anyone what it does!!

I have had that experience with Audi too when it says 'software update FOC' on the bill and I have asked what it included and they say they do not have a clue!

I was told recently, though, that software updates for the GT/GC are now rare as the factory (ies) are now focused on the QP/Ghibli. Our cars are now run out models so are of little interest to Maserati. The upside of that is that main dealer servicing is of less interest with the cars suported less by the manufacturer - increasingly dealers will now have to price match independents as many do on the GS/QPV.

According to Lancaster they still come out every 3-6 months for the GTS because they are using two software providers. Typically they are related to connectivity around Bluetooth (or new phone types) and he suspects the one next week is to resolve issues around the iPhone 6

So if you have a GTS and an iPhone 6 get your car booked in after next week!!

Is it something we can do ourselves? Don't really want to have to to take it to my dealer and pay just to get a software update.

As I understand it your dealer can give you a USB with the update to 'load up' - I say that with a full disclaimer though!!

There is a design flaw with the 4.7 engine. There is no time variations. Mine is at repair and the part is sent to Italy to repair. I will update you with what the part is called. It is around £4000 pound fix. Another problem is the coolent header box. change those as mine is cracked and leaking.

Did anything look different on your screen after the update?
