Hi guys, I have a GTS MC shift and I am absolutely loving it, what a car, what a noise. Just checking on something I was told by a dealer, I have heard that the clutch needs replacing every 12-15k miles...? I have heard different stories from different people, is the above correct?

Cheers

I guess it depends on how you drive it. Drive it hard, in sport and it will, in all probability, last a lot longer. Drive it until you get slippage or selection problems and then get a new one in. Enjoy it, don't worry about it. It will last as long as it lasts.

I bought my car with 7900 miles on it and the clutch had just been done. Don't know what happened.

I suppose you have to look at the 4200 as a guide, drive it on auto or reverse uphill or crawl in traffic and it will last shorter. As Benny says, the more positively you drive the car, the less slippage and less wear you get.

My QP was changed at 36k , but was advised it would have gone further...:)
It's now on 54K with no issues.. & that includes a few launch control(sic) starts..
Don't worry just drive it & enjoy..

My local man dealer told me they've never changed a clutch on an MC GTS. I'm on 21k miles and 52% wear, at least according to the dubiously accurate diagnostics. I think running in auto kills it whereas manual (as well as being a far better drive) is kinder to the clutch.

The reverse up hill.
Never have to do it normally, but caught facing downhill on a country road and met an OAP in a fiesta. He was not prepared to reverse anywhere, just sat there caught in headlights so to speak, so I had to reverse up to the nearest passing point even though he was just passed one.
Yes the usually smelly clutch. Why should reverse be different to first? I was positive, but they don't like it do they they!

Hi V8smith, Dick Lovett told me average for a clutch is around 30/35k...You can get more but as above it all depends how its driven and treated.

Dont know who told you that but he's blatantly wrong and has got mixed up with the earlier coupes 2002 -2004 that had single tang clutches , more recently the conversion to dual tang has increased longevity to around 30-35K on the older style coupes and the later coupes as in turismo's last slightly longer still as they have an improved feed in system , just enjoy and drive like you stole it but not in auto , that will decrease the life by around 20%

Also the MC Shift is a dual plate clutch so is upgraded from the 4200 single plate system.

The reversing up a hill puts tremendous strain/wear on the clutch as its engineered to slip in reverse for more control.

Cheers guys, I always drive it in MC mode anyway, why buy an MC if you are going to drive in auto :) not worried it is what it is, just puzzled by the different opinions and wanted to know if I was lied to in the first instance, which it appears I wasn't, cheers.

It was Joe Macaris service dept who said this, maybe he is mixing it up with the older coupe

Get sick of these people in the dealerships that barely know what they are talking about.

General rule of thumb with the clutch - minimize contact, maximize life. The more friction, the more it will wear.
