GS - Handbrake?

The car's getting used only once a week and whenever I set of for the first time it feels like there's something seized up which then gets released with a clunk. Any ideas? Something to do with the handbrake - I'm assuming there's some kind of auto handbrake function related to the CC transmission?

Are you putting the handbrake on? If so, stop.

Other than that, are you parking outside in the wet? If so it's the pads freeing off from the discs. The GS has no automatic brake.

No but the handbrake shoes are notorious for sticking if you use the handbrake, likewise the pads will stick a bit in damp conditions because of the iron in the disks.

As Humpers says, leave the handbrake off and the car in first, handbrake is not needed and if used welds itself to the inside of the disk then rips itself off when you try and release it after time.

I only use the handbrake when on a hill for a short time.

Ok, the car gets parked on the road but sounds like I should be leaving it in first (and the CC box doesn't switch to neutral when the engine's off?)

Actually, Maserati recommends leaving it in gear before switching off, hence why you get the warning beeps when you don't!
It then automatically shifts into neutral when you insert the key and turn on the ignition before starting...so you can't start her in gear.

It delays starting the car by a second or so if you turn the ignition key while it is in gear. The other option is to put your foot on the brake and pull both paddles prior to starting but with the ignition on which i prefer.

There's your answer - just check that the handbrake is working ok at MOT time, possibly the only time it will be needed
