Granturismo S: Weird jolt/thud/knock when coming off throttle in reverse and 1st

Looking for some advice. I searched all around and can’t find anything similar but not really sure what words to use to describe or search for it!

When I am going slow in reverse (very small amount of throttle) leaving my parking spot, then come off throttle, seems like as the clutch disengages there is a very pronounced jolt and soft knock noise (with a single big knock/vibration as if something is loose and twisting) as the revs drop and clutch goes “pushed”.

It also happens in 1st gear if I am creeping forwards when I come off the throttle when clutch disengages, but not as severely.

It feels like this looseness is from the front of me (in the engine bay), but I know the gearbox (and clutch?) is at the rear.

Any ideas what this could be? Would any more info be useful? Thanks in advance!

If it's an MC shift, they do that. Like an old tractor. Please confirm to give better guidance.

Autobox or MC Shift?

Eek sounds bad!! Take it to garage ASAP?

Well, if it's that it's a pretty easy fix you certainly don't want to be driving it much more but all you need to do is jack a wheel off the ground and rotate it by hand. You'll feel the backlash.

There's lots of other things it could be as well, though.

As @azapa says though, what gearbox is it?

Assuming it's MC shift box with a transaxle from the description but if the noise is from the front, can't be the transmission. Could it be vibration travelling through to the engine mounts which can become loose?

Hi - thanks for replying.
It’s a 2009 MC Shift. It wasn’t this noticeable until recently though, so feels like something has changed there. Quite a heavy feeling release and knock of something.

Another thing I sometimes get (may be related) is that if I am slowly driving forwards, down a small steep slope (we have one on the entry/exit of our house with about 10cm drop in 25cm length so quite steep) whilst steering a lot, as the clutch is semi-slipping in 1st, there is a bit of a grinding noise and faster vibration.

Last time I checked the clutch had 46% Health remaining (about 1500 miles ago).

Some more info below that COULD be related that I also need to check out.

Three times now, when first setting off - car gets to 2nd gear, right foot completely steady on very gentle acceleration and the car decides to really LURCH as if I am stamping on throttle then letting go, then stamping on again and letting go again. Like it doesn’t know how much throttle to apply and quickly over correcting every half second. Does this UNTIL I totally release the gas pedal, then it settles down next time I apply throttle and all normal again. Only happened 3 times in the last year I guess.

Hard to say. I know sound can “travel” but it certainly feels and sounds like it’s right in front of me, low down behind the steering wheel. I will try next time I drive with the window open - maybe that will help me pinpoint it more.

Last service was done by you guys actually. When I brought it in for the underbody rust seal job. I’m from Plymouth though, so a bit of a trek! I’ll give you or Ashley a call on Monday? Thinking might just have to take her to Carrs Ferrari in Exeter this time though (even that’s an hour away and I’m not too happy with the last time they looked at my car :( … and they are very expensive! :( )

Maybe can trailer it to you hehe

To be fair your driveway is not going to be doing your clutch any good at all from my experiences and the number of clutches I did in Auckland New Zealand.

Ah ok it’s Mark is it not and we saw you back in August? We see a lot of cars and forum names not relating to actual names always catches us out.

Yeah it’s me :)

Wheel bolts all feel tight. Did a video this morning (link below). It’s not as bad today but you can still hear the clunk a couple of times in reverse. Warmer day today so maybe weather has an effect?

I imagine it’s being “felt” as much as it is being heard, so you might have to be driving it to hear it.

Pound to a penny it’s going to need a new clutch :(

Check the front heat shields. You'll need to get underneath. Mine had come loose (aka, in this case, not been bloody put back on properly after some work). I'm trying to remember the circumstances, but they made a very disturbing noise at low / manoeuvring speeds. Easy fix.

They’re all extremely clunky, all single clutch vehicles of this age are noisy. R8 with r tronic would do the same, but I couldn’t hear anything unusual in the clip.
