Granturismo S depreciation and dealer profit margin.

Hi Everyone

I am new to this forum and on the hunt to get myself a Granturismo S, or Granturismo S MC Shift. My Budget is £65,000. My Plan is to get a 2011-2012 car with around 10-15k on it. Keep it for a year, put about 10k on it and then sell it. I am currently looking at this particular car. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...anturismo-s-4-7-v8--mc-shift--2011-60/3639057

I have two questions that I am hoping people who have experience buying from and selling to dealers such as Greypaul and Meridien Modena etc, can help me out with.

1. When I go to sell the car to a dealer in one years time what sort of profit margin would these dealers usually take? I am comfortable with loosing bit of money for a quick, hassle free sale but not keen on selling the car only to see it online a few days later for 5+ thousands more. Any info on what sort of figures they typically squeeze you for would be great.

2. What sort of depreciation would you expect on the above car in a years time with 10k miles on it?

Any info or experience would be great.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the site

Dealers are in the buiness to make money so if you dont like helping them do this then to be honest you shouldn't sell it to the trade and you should sell it yourself privately.
If it helps I purchased mine from Meriden exactly a year ago
It was a 60 plate MC shift with 14000 miles on it and it was also up for £59,995 so in a year at trade prices my car hasn't lost anything but I'm sure if I sold it privately I'd expect to get maybe late £40k area

Coincidentally I also bought mine from Meridian and would happily buy from them again. As for resale values, we all like to think we will get a bargain but I think the reality is that if you are buying a relatively new Granturismo then you should expect that it'll cost you a small fortune. If you can't accept that then get something much cheaper. Alternatively do what I did - do the man maths to justify it, buy it, enjoy it and then worry about the costs later!

I would expect the dealer to need at least £5k margin/profit on such a car. They need to prep it, service it, give a warranty, etc. and it'll have depreciated £10k anyway. So budget on it costing at least £15k in your year of ownership, not including consumables.

The trade price to Main Dealer spread on these is massive. (That's not to say their margins end up massive of course because of prep costs etc.)
But.. when I bought mine privately in 2013 at £500 over his best trade bid ( 2008/58 Mc-shift perfect spec) it was nigh on 9-10 grand less than the MD retail price. It was no-brainer because it had 6 months Mas extended warranty and had just had a service etc.
Kept it 9 months, put 7k miles on it, and sold it on SOR within two weeks, bringing me a 4 grand profit, AFTER the indi dealer had taken his cut.
I'd scour the private sales religiously but patiently, see what's sticking, find one with a warranty, get it inspected and rejoice in a bargain.
And enjoy the whole process, they're wonderful cars.

That's exactly what will happen! As someone said above, dealers are in business to make a profit! Any luxury good has much bigger margins than commodity products. You pays your money you takes your choice......I chose a dealer because of availability and because it was my first Maserati. Now I know my way around the car and have had a year of trouble free motoring I think I would be confident enough to buy private next time. I would always get an inspection done and probably top up with an after market warranty, but private seems to be a perfectly ok way to get a good deal.

Yep, you've just got to suck it up. I bought from a main dealer too for peace of mind. So paid over the odds but got Maserati warranty, full service, new tyres, car prepped to highest standards, etc etc.

I know I will take a £20k+ depreciation hit in 2 years. I've only had it 6 months and it's already worth that hit! :)

I bought mine from a main dealer, if I'd paid full asking price I would have lost £10k in just under a year, as I got a good deal I only lost £4k. I sold it back to a different dealer who only put a £4k markup on it, it was immaculate though so needed no prep but would have needed some warranty. The key is to find a car the dealer has plenty of profit in and buy as cheap as possible, the less you pay the less you loose.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
This will be my first 'exotic' car so unsure as to how much room for negotiation there is when buying / selling but it's encouraging to hear there are good deals (relatively speaking) to be had if you can haggle a good price.

I'm doing a long euro trip in July this year and the thought of crusing through the Italian alps in a Maserati granturismo is too much to resist. This long term itch needs a good scratch!!

You may be better off looking at a slightly older one at the latter stage of the depreciation curve if you are only looking to keep it for a year. I was in a similar position and ended up going for a 2009 plate instead, which cost £44k (white, MC Shift/23k miles/carbon interior and exterior packs/sports handling pack/BOSE etc). There are 58 plates with double the mileage going for more than I paid so I think for the first time in my life I may be in a position not to lose money on a car when it comes to time to sell! The flip side is it hasn't been without its niggles - it wasn't bought from Maserati so came without a Maserati warranty hence the price I imagine. Either way, good luck with your purchase, I am sure you will enjoy!

I think that these are good questions and I can't understand why people get snooty about being asked?!

We are all enthusiasts (you HAVE to be to own a Maserati!) and so don't mind paying a premium (I certainly did as I bought from a Maserati dealer), and yet equally don't want to get fleeced. So why not tell people on this board if you genuinely know? :-o

I was in a similar position to you. Bought for nearer £70k and got a 2012 plate MC Shift with multiple carbon packs. Low mileage 6k single owner full maserati warranty and just had it's service.

I expect to lose £10k after a year if I sell.
