On my car if you were to remove the cats and replace them with a straight through pipe, there would actually be no cats left in the system. Also, I met Alvin at the FCA event and he mentioned that decats + X-pipe + Larini back boxes was insanely loud (believe there is also mention of this on the Aus forum).

I've removed the secondary CATS and replaced the central resonator with a custom x-pipe, this made the car a fair bit louder and it seems to rev a little more freely but that maybe jus placebo. I think my next ste will be to get the 15mm spacers

A custom exhaust maker should be able to tune the sound to your liking. I had the OEM scaffold and pinched pipes replaced with a full bore stainless steel custom alternative, and it wasn't noticeably louder - although I did specifically ask for it to be kept reasonably quiet.

As an aside, getting rid of the pinched pipes seemed to free up the revs somewhat.

In Melb. GS with Larini x pipe, 2nd cats replaced with str thru pipe work and Larini non valved back boxes was far too load (xcept for Benny maybe :) ) and OEM reinstalled immediately

Would love to hear this combination with VALVED Larini back boxes.

Can you retrofit valves to larini rear boxes? I have thought about it but didn't know if just shutting off one of tail pipes on each side was all the difference? On each individual box, is one tailpipe 'quiet' and one 'loud', and therefore with unvalved larini's you just get loud all the time and valved larini's the valve cuts off the 'loud' side?....need x-ray eyes to see inside!

Could always jam a potato up and see if there is a difference!

I suppose it's possible, but would mean gutting what's in there and starting again. If Larini did it for you I would imagine it would be prohibitively expensive. Might be best to see if you can find some used valved boxes and then sell your on to cover the cost. You would then still need to fit a control to open and close the valves.

You might not need to open up the inside though, just retrofit valves to the inner tailpipe on each side. How is the internal plumbing on the OEM GS boxes with regard to the valves?

Benny or Matt can answer that.

My car already had the valved Larini rear boxes fitted when I bought it. In 'normal' mode they sounded terrible - rattling and buzzing really heavily. ADG spoke to Larini, who agreed to fit new actuators in the boxes (I had heard that there had been similar problems with the early valved boxes). They had to open them up, refit certain parts and weld back together. They came back better than before, but still sounded like a wasp had been trapped in a biscuit tin. Over the past couple of years they've worsened again to the point that I can't stand hearing the car out of Sport mode at low speeds or idle. I was tempted to fix the valves open, but sometimes I need the quieter (!!!!!) mode.

With regard to the standard GS boxes; there is a large perforated manifold along the back of the box and two parallel, perforated pipes coming off at 90 degrees going to the tips. The only difference is that the inner (loud) pipe is of a bigger diameter than the outer (quiet) pipe. The whole set us is fairly cr4p and that's why there is f*ck all difference between valves open and valves shut. We rip out all the standard piping and reinstate solid pipe to the loud side and perforated pipe to the quiet side. This makes it a lot louder in Sport and a bit quieter in normal.

I can't imagine any moving parts actually inside the box? It's just opening and closing off one of the tailpipes on the outside of these ...I thought?

Edit: post at same time.

So I bet larini are similar. Must try my king Edward potato theory!

Like everyone says in a round about way...sky's the limit for mods.
I've changed things up slowly over my 3 years of ownership. but over those 3 years quite a bit.
Standard things like Tubi's, CF paddles, CF steering wheel, etc, all the way to switching from a pastic rear window (2002 Spyder) to a glass rear window from a 2006.
Next in my sights is the G&S EVO body mod to emulate the Gran Turismo front end complete with the full grill!
I think I'm addicted to upgrades. LOL
In the end it comes down to individual taste. Some stay purist, others...not so much.
My opinion...do whatever makes you happy!
