The ignition key fob took a swim at 30c in non bio and a spin at 1200 revs when the domestic in chief decided to wash my trousers without checking the pockets. Took it apart, wiped out the residue, sprayed it with degreaser, and baked it for ten minutes at 50c in the oven. Astonishingly it still works. Which sent me off onto the mental trail; what would have happened if it didn't ? Anyone had a clone key made......some of the key copyers (eg mr minit, simpsons) claim to be able to produce them, might be worth getting another spare made in anticipation of next time. I don't have the infamous "red key" for my car.

Just renewed the insurance, after much searching, interneting and bargaining got it down to £350 by going direct to Aviva.

Not all cars have a red key some have a red key card, I think I am correct, would also be interested in a spare key as the dealer quotes £150.00

Red keys finished with the 3200 , red key cards were then supplied with the 4200 and GS , not sure with the QP and turismo

If i could get a spare for £150 i jump at it , is that coded tho , or will the coding be on top of that £150

You see the odd blank 4200 key on ebay never saw a 3200 key, they were looking around £250 for them.

no sure it was a while ago, took my spare key into greypaul solihul as it does not work, had it checked for free at our workshop morning in nottingham so it may just need recoding.

A new key at Maranellos cost me £100 including programming. On the 3200 you do need the red key to reprogram all your keys for the immobilser/code check to work, I guess the red card is used on the 4200 to do the same.
There is a company that will create a new red key for a 3200, they need the ecu, plus your keys, I posted the link on here a while back, do a search for red key..,.

Where can you get a red card for the 4200 and why would you need one? Mine came with two working keys. Is that usually enough?

2 working keys is standard,
the key code card is credit card sized (but thinner) and has 2 codes on it...
an electronic code and a mechanical code.

You will need the electronic code (5 digits) to perform the emergency start procedure.

You can get them from a main dealer (have to supply various details, vin etc...)

Crikee.....

....didn't expect that level of excitement !

KEY. My handbook (2004 4200GT) says I must have a red card but current advice is I don't need one. I have 2 keys and a small card with mechanical and electrical codes. I'll pursue getting another (non dealer) key and report back. Don't believe that the button function is necessary - door key will work fine but won't turn on the immobiliser or alarm eg I use the door key on motorail and ferry.

INSURANCE. Used search engines and then explored the details of the quotation down to the underwriters, in most cases Aviva was used, so the variance in price was down to the agents mark up. Post Office (!) was actually the cheapest at £317 but completing the process on line it jumped up to £376.....couldn't establish why. Personal details are, use SDP only, two drivers both max NCB, 8000miles per annum estimated; £850 excess, use of another car and two motorcycles, houseowner, no accidents, claims or convictions, green card included (£26 cheaper without), NCB protection and legal aid also included, kept overnight in brick garage. Declined breakdown and other add ons. NCI - full UK and Europe breakdown and recovery for £60 taken out separately. Don't think anything else is relevant but come back if I missed anything.........seems there is an age trigger (over 50) for reduction because I tried it both ways - wife is under 50 and I'm over, using her raised the premium with some underwriters. In conclusion it's all a "scam" to see what they can get you to pay..they all try the Dutch auction which I don't play.

Interestingly, my 2000 3200GT came with a red key... which when I opened it up had nothing inside the key head!! The red key button is also made of hard plastic and does not appear to be moveable (which would make sense as there's nothing inside the key anyway) It however also came with a red card that has the mechanical and electronic codes.

Does anyone have a line on replacement buttons for the 3200 key? The one on my black key is practically worn through and Eurospares only sells it as part of a kit for the key at around 70 GBP. I only need the little button which can't be worth more than a few cents.

Update

Apparently the key immobiliser chip is CRYPTO the same as Peugeot/Vauxhall. It may be possible to make a copy without the remote part for about £70, A full copy with a Maserati key will be between £120 and £170. I need to do some more homework on getting a (non remote) blank to fit........I'll be back
