Fuel Filling Problem

Chaps,

My 4200 is a pig to fill with fuel.. it blows the petrol back and really just goes in at a trickle. It takes for ever just to get £20 in at the pump with it constantly clicking off and having to dribble the petrol in.

So..

This afternoon I removed the fuel filler neck to check for blockages. It's all fine.. the breather is fine and the main passageway is clear.

I used an endoscope to look at the fuel entrance to the tank and it looks as if there's some kind of "seal and flap" just inside the tank (if my eyes aren't deceiving me). It appears this would be the problem as it's not dropping out the way when the petrol comes down the pipe.

As the car had a light tap to the rear I wonder if this is some kind of roll over protection!?

I'd rather not have to take the entire tank out so wondering if anyone here has any bright ideas? I can't see anything on Eurospares exploded diagrams that suggests there's anything in the tank in that area.. but there is!

Help!?

Sounds like the anti syphon flap has dropped. It should be right near the mouth so the pump nozzle pushes it out of the way and the fuel goes in further down. If it's blocking the fill below the nozzle (as it were) it's going to be a pig to fill :(

I had to replace my filler nozzle. I got the part second hand I recall. £255 new! Apparently a bit of a sod to do.

Hi Catman,

Nope it's not that. The syphon flap is present and correct. This thing appears to be black with an orange ring around it and a silver centre of some kind.. it's much larger than the little syphon flap.

I'm just trying figure out what on earth it could be.. and how to either fix it.. or get it out the bl**dy way (so long as it's safe to do so!).

Mine sometimes does this, I thought it may be an airlock or something, takes ages to get ten pounds in at a dribble then suddenly it's ok and you can go at full flow.

Wow, OK. That is odd. Maybe someone stuck something in there?

Difficult to tell but it appears to open in to the tank so would have always been there. But...
I can't see anything like it on Eurospares diagrams.

Nope, never a problem going in.........and sometimes seems to evaporate at a similar speed! Lol

I've just googled it , and appears to be quite common. Pierburg valve, carbon canister, key position, or a mixture of all three, seems to be the alleged culprits. Mine only does it sometimes so I will try and figure out if there is any pattern.

Saw those too. But there's definitely something blocking the end of the pipe which appears to be the culprit rather than any kind of vapour locking.

Going to try to get some pictures of it tomorrow to shed some more light on it.

Cheers

Give Emblem a call. They are open in half an hour.

Ok.. here's some pictures of the "thing" at the bottom of the fuel neck which seems to be spring loaded.

Gave Emblem a call (very helpful they are too) and they suggest first culprit would be to change the carbon canister. It's supposed to be done every 4 years and more often than not does not get changed...

Will try taking it out later and see if it appears blocked or not.
