Ferrari 348 - Is it that bad ?

I have always quite liked these but realise that lots are not fans because they were not that great and a bit tricky on the limit....Wll in this months EVO they do an article on Ferrari's V8 junoir supercars.....308 gts, 348 tb, 355, 360, F430 and the 458..

Now I expected the 348 to be slated when in fact they really liked it and that showed in the scoring at the end....

308 4 stars
348 4.5 stars
355 4.5 stars
360 4.5 stars
430 5 stars
458 5 stars...

This really suprised me as they rated the 348 on the same level as a 355 and 360..............They ended the article by saying the highlight was the 348's steering..........They also said that the 348 had the best steering, and possibly the best steering of any car they had driven..........

SO is this car that bad...On the face of the article I would say its a bit of a bargain these days...a two seater Ferrari for between 20/30k.....A good 355 has now gone up in money and good ones are well into the 40 plus ground.......

You may not be a fan of the looks but for me its one of the bargains at the moment......and after reading the review and bloody good one as well....

Pick a colour Andy, any colour you like...

Have never been a big fan (even of the uni-coloured ones!),
but maybe a bit unfair of me as I have never driven one.

Well for starters evo tested the wrong 348, the tb and ts were the early cars, the later cars, GTB, GTS and Spider were considered better versions although they are more rare. I have never warmed to the 348, you would IMO only have a 348 because you cant afford a 355; however, evo tested the 348 Competizione against a 964 RS and said it was very good, the car the 348 should have started off as, shame only 50 were made and 8 came to the UK. Personally, i would never buy a 348, would rather a 308 or a 328.

I looked into buying a 348 many moons ago, never got one in the end but my research showed me that the early ones were rather problematic but the very last ones off the production line were much more sorted. IIRC, this was clearly represented in the price. I imagine there will be a website somewhere with the full story around this, perhaps Wikipedia.

Been discussed before and someone posted a Tour de France blue one with 355 wheels - it looked the dog's danglies! A relatively modern Ferrari for £20k, what's not too like? Not the prettiest, not the fastest, but still a cavallino rampante and a fine car.

Strange how the Esprit and 911 Turbo of the era have become fashionable again but the 348 remains unloved. It's a beautifully proportioned car, only the fine details were lacking as shown by the perfection of the 355 which is just an evolution of the 348 shape (with an amazing 5-valve engine!).

Some very good points made...
there is a lot of info and knowledge out there on these, and they are liked by a lot of people,
at some stage I bet they come back into 'fashion' and prices will reflect that.

Think Urby will have an input here if he see;s the thread , he had a relatively newish one at the time and it gave him nothing but trouble and major expense Adam

SO what you are saying is that tested the early car....348 tb.....which wasn't as good as the later ones........Thats even better then as it they loved the tb the others most be even better..............

Would say most Ferraris of that age are trouble to be honest..They never had a reputation for reliable cars back then ...but then again neither did any Italian marque....

Are you referring to the black car Adam? If so, you're missing the point of what Angelis is doing/has done to his car. Read his thread and you will understand more. He's not trying to make it look like a 355 (it would need a lot more than wheels to do that), more that he's improving on what he has.

I had a 308GT4 and yes I would not wish it on my worse enemy.

As for the 348 it did not have a great reputation for build quality or reliability.

A 355 can be had for little more money and it is by far the better car and far more capable in performance, reliability and desirability. The 355 was Ferrari's first modern Ferrari

For me the 348 was the nearlly car and one which along with thee Mondial I am sure Ferrari would rather forget about

Not according to this months EVO UM.....They rated it a 4.5 stars and the 355 a 4.5 stars............Also the 348 seems to be bargain price for a good one..25k............Good 355's are now 40k plus...They have gone up....Yes you could get a leggy unloved 355 for 32kish but gone are the days of great 355's at 30k...SO the 348 is still some what of a bargain Ferrari............

Are they good thought Adam....Read a used car review and nuyer beware..You want a good car that is not going to cost you a load then a specialist dealer is probably the best way to buy and that will cost you 40k....... Was reading about a chap who bought pne for 33k and thought he had had a bargian.....Look lovely serviced well..bought private cost him a fortune in the first 6 months..Said he wished he had paid more and got a warranty.....Not saying there are not goods ones out there for low 30's but I bet they are far and few between..............

After talking to Pat on Thursday I can understand why people pay extra from a good dealer with warrenty for cars like this....Piece of mind...
