FEAD Squeak Problem

When my engine gets warm I get a squeak coming from the belt drive system on the front. It's related to engine speed so I suspect that it's one of the idler pulleys or belt tensioner. I have tried to identify which component is the cause by squirting each pulley with a little WD40 whilst the engine is running but this hasn't helped. It's strange that it only starts to squeak once the engine is up to temperature – all is quiet when the engine is started from cold. At the weekend I intend to take the belt off and manually turn each of the pulleys but I'm worried that I won't find anything as everything will be cold.

I was wondering if any of you have ever experienced the same problem and could point me in the direction of the most likely cause?

If not I think I'll order a new belt, idler pulleys and tensioner from Eurospares and replace the whole lot.

Thanks for your help.

Steve B, I remember an up-date or modification to the belt pulley off the USA board...

"MODEL: M138 (all models), M139 (all models)
SUBJECT: Auxiliary Belt Noise
In case of customer complaint of a squealing noise, or in case of a squealing noise
occurring during PDI, then it is necessary to replace the accessory belt (Figure 1,
Callout 1) AND align the alternator pulley."

Not sure if I can up-load the page...may be of use.

Steve, I had the same thing, is was the aux belt idler pulley. It went in the end, as I did not use the car much and it was outside all winter.

Using it and more clement weather sorted it.

Thanks for the suggestions. It certainly sounds like one of the pulleys as it's an intermittent squeak at a regular frequency dependent on engine speed rather than a continuous squeal. I think I'll start by removing the idler pulley and if it seems worn I'll replace it.

Thanks again.

tell me Matt,
Did this noise seem to come from the front or side of the car and was it like a whine when you floored it ?
After my service and belts replacement i occasionally get a bit of a whine when i give it some welly.
I really hate the sound when i am accelerating as it sounds nasty.
I also seem to get a lot of brake squeek and although i "blow out the dust" with a power washer regularily its always there within a few minutes of driving.
Again your driving down the road and everyone hears the roar of that V8 ...accompanied by a squeek, squeek squeek squeek from the wheels.....Not a great feeling and kinda takes the prescence of the car to a diiferent and lesser level.

Adam, the squeal you describe is more than likely your spigot bearing, its a known weak spot.

As for me, mine only made noise at idle.

As for brake squeal, you need to put a blob of copper slip grease on the back of the pads that usually works. Also, check that the pads drop into the callipers. If they are at all sticky clean the callipers pad guides and file down the paint off the pads if necessary.

A squeak, squeak at low speed 1-10 miles an hour is usually the rear handbrake shoes in need of either replacement or adjustment.

Sqealing on hard pull away in first or 2nd will be the spiggot bearing, if it happens at idle or revving then its more than likely tensioners and or sliiping belt

Definately copper slip the backs of the pads both sides , and worth whipping the rear hubs off and clean out those rear brake shoes , it gets full of dust in there and you get the occasional little stone that can cause a sqeak , or squeal , only takes 10 mins a side thats when you have done once ,
