Hi there,

Since having a new pump put in a few months back I have noticed a couple of times that once i park up, turn off and lock the car the pump starts whirring. Its as if its repressurising the system. Never used to do this so I'm not sure if its normal or not. Its only happened twice mind.

Any ideas?

You sure its not the wing mirrors, the mirrors returning to their neutral position.

Could be the pressure sensor is playing up a little , no real angst providing its just a brief top up , its when it stays on that the burn out process begins

yes - pretty sure it's the pump making the same whirring noise it does when you first unlock the car. definitely not the wing mirrors though. Pressure Sensor could be playing up indeed. i notice selecting reverse takes a bit more time than i would like. if i start from cold i have to wait a few more secs before it will select reverse. once warmed up it's fine though.

I'll keep monitoring it and see how often and exactly when it seems to do it.

Relay is the first thing you want to replace, it might be sticking on and it will burn out the pump. I am assuming that it got replaced when the pump was done, if not....

...and ensure its "matched" to the pump ie the later pumps were up-rated/improved and the relay likewise...this has been raised on the maseratilife forum...................best to speak to an indie to get it right

Autofficina said they changed the relay and pump but i will need to check the car in the morning to see what part number they relay is. They initially used a second hand pump which didn't work so i got them to source the alfa pump. Has been fine since, apart from the above mentioned issue(s). Relay they used cost about £40/50. was annoyed as I expected them to know about the Alfa pump and the equivalent relay to match it. Felt like i was telling them how to do their job.

When first starting the car it's always in neutral but if I've been driving about and i'm about to park i go from 1st gear to reverse no problems

Conero is right - i will order relay tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

I park mine in gear (read on a forum somewhere, if not in the manual, and it saves the useless handbrake sticking on).

It always drops into neutral as soon as I turn it over. Never have any issues taking into straight into first and away.

Perhaps ring Marios at Autoshield....he can ensure its matched correctly or at least reassure you.

I am not sure but I think....NOTE think the Alfa pump is still the non-uprated version.......hence its a lot cheaper...plus its only the pump that is supplied. the Maserati sourced pump comes with a little electronic box too.

I am not sure if the older style relays are still made or available............they could have used the newer heavier rated relay with an older type pump.........am afraid it needs a bit more research and indepth diagnosing, hence speaking to Marios to get it sorted....say you'd been advised to off this forum
