F1 GTS - Clutch slip/judder reverse - starting point....? Clutch re-learn? F1 oil change?

Hi All, I purchased a 2011 F1 Granturismo GTS a few months back, I absolutely love it! It is hands down the best car I have ever owned, really happy with my purchase

Since purchase I have had the following
  • Clutch slip on occasion, normally within the first 100 metres of driving the car. Engine just revs up to 4000 rpm, only lasts for a second, then it dosen't happen again
  • Clutch judder - I think its fairly normal with these cars that when changing gear say at 3-4k revs, that it kinda hesitates for a second, almost like a pause. I presume it is a quirk of these cars, but I dont know. If i change gear at 5-6k revs I dont really notice it....i guess that is the "MC shift"! I have noticed that in reverse it is definitely becoming a more pronounced judder (jerkeness), and seems a little loud, alnost like a loose differnential/gearbox mount, but its probally just the clutch. This is reversing on the flat, not an incline, on an incline, oh yeah that real bad. I wont do that again.
  • Fairly loud gearchange into reverse/first. I dont really notice it any more, but initially i did notice that the gearchange seems fairly loud into reverse, 1st, but again could just be a quirk of these cars
When purchased, I was told the clutch wear was 41%, and i noticed all of these problems within 1000 miles. I have also noticed that my F1 gearbox and diff oil were last changed 4 years ago (approx 5000 miles).

My main question is what is my best starting point?
  • Check the clutch wear? I am looking at EasyMas.
  • Clutch re-learn? I believe I can do this with the EasyMas pro? Are there any procedures i can read up on?
  • F1 gear and diff oil change. This is out of date (4 years). Should I start here? I have a ramp, and have worked on cars for 30 years. Is this something I can do? Where could I find the procedure/workshop manual? Do i need an EasyMas pro tool to do this? Is there also a filter or just the oil? I noticed the service book says, there is the F1 gearbox and diff oil...AND also a f1 system oil. What is the f1 system oil? The book says it should only be inspected during servicing. When should it be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome. I'm afraid that sounds like a failing clutch to me (remember the wear figure is not exactly accurate). However, someone more expert will be along shortly.

mmm, yeah that is a worry. Indeed I have read that the symptoms of a failing clutch start like that. With one forum post saying that's how they start, then get worse, before failure with new clutch and flywheel needed. Oh well, I am hoping I can try a few things first!

I should have also added - Mileage is 29,000, and I do the start up procedure of....

turn ignition on, wait for most lights to go out. I also pump accelerator 3 times, but really I think this is just a time delay thing. I then start the car. Sometimes I repeat the procedure. I have noticed on occasion - when it seems really jerky in the morning, that a restart using the "procedure" does seem to help. It has me thinking that software might have something to do with it, hence the question on clutch re-learn.....but it is probally just wishfull thinking!!

Hi. GT MCS are pretty reliable to this:

Clutch works without fault up to 40k miles

Early 40’s starts to drop the odd gear

45k more pronounced and time for change

Can limp on to 50k mikes but will slip

If your mileage is genuine as is your wear which does sound about right it may just need setting up, adjusting and a relearn. It sounds like the PIS point is wrong or the bearing is catching on the shaft.

Of course the above is for the average car, any that have been abused would cause issues earlier.

If your anywhere near Southampton pop into SportsItallia and I’ll have a look at it for you for free.

Aw thank you! I read your posts with the absolute highest level of respect and regard, your support is just amazing. There are lots of great Maserati's thanks to you!!

I am a really long way from you (250 ish miles). I bought the GT knowing that I will mostly have to look after it myself, with certain jobs for yourself (i.e clutch replacement, or etc).

I'm hoping (praying!) with a bit of guidance I could learn to do the clutch re-learn using the internet and the right tools (i.e easy mas pro), I also need to think about the F1 oil change. Again I am praying with some guidance that It would be something I could do. I have if it helps give some confidence in me.....owned approx. 120 cars. My first Maserati though! I have been motor trade in my life, but these days I write instruction manuals for a living. I just look after my own cars for the love of it now.

The GT I believe has been fairly well looked after, it has full Mas dealer history, and was a loved car. In any case it sounds like my starting point is to get the easy mas tool, and take some screen shots of the parameters - maybe that will help with determining the PIS.

Although I have had the car for a few months, I haven't actually put it on my ramp yet. I suppose I have been somewhat worried at what I might see, as I spent every penny on the car (little left at the moment), I will however do an inspection on the ramp over the coming weeks, as I do plan to give it some real attention between Christmas and April

If you get EasyMas Pro then you can do this yourself. Give me a shout when you get it and I’ll talk you through it.

You will also be able to do the clutch yourself as you can set it up with EasyMas.

Having owned a GTS MC Shift for over three years, my 2010 is sitting in 31,999 and I had a slip when I first bought it but I think the car was in re learn mode. Not slipped since but the car having a semi robotised transmission will be hard shift between gears before 4k revs and ease i to gears more efficiently in mc shift mode.

The reverse thing ive not experienced. I do find that neutralising gears at lights etc can help especially if the lights are like Irish ones, very slow.

Thanks! I have an easy mas pro on the way. So I will have a look next week. In the meantime I will do some more forum reading/research so I understand the system a bit more
