Diesel cars

Ok chaps. It seems that my business life from now on will include a lot of long distance trips.

Doing them 3-4 years before was not a problem, but now it is, cause petrol has been dramatically increased here.

Question is...what diesel car would supply performance, sport styling and limited consumption? Remember my day car is a tuned Audi S3.

Always love the brera, but the only reasonable engine is the 2.0JTDM, the others (2.4JTDM) are similar fuel consumption to petrol.

Let me know what other options are good, if you are keen.

PS:No...i won't buy a diesel trident :)

Nikos,
I have only ever owned one diesel car amongst the 40 or so cars I have owned,
it was a VW golf...she was good on economy, drove very well and build quality was good,
no idea why I bought her, nothing against the golf, but I will never buy a diesel car again
(and you can forget electric or hybrid or any of that other fancy stuff).
Horses for courses of course, so if you are doing lots of driving I guess it makes sense,
providing you don't pay too much of a premium upfront over a petrol equivalent.

The small German VW, called the UP! - (eco type cars) are the way to go...just as frugal as a diesel, none of the humiliation of buying a diesel car....;)...assuming you want small and cheapish etc

Believe it or not, a chipped BMW 335D won't be far behind your S3 on performance. Top speed high 160s and 0-60 in about 5.4-5.6 secs depending on chip. On a gentle run mid 40s, rear wheel drive and great brakes. Even a chipped 330D will give 275-280 brake and low 50s on a run.

My Jaguar XF is a 3.0 twin turbo V6, 240 bhp, 0-60 6.7 and does 35mpg round town and had 50 mpg showing on motorway runs. Great car, and with a remap goes to around 310bhp and 450 lb ft of torque and even better economy.

I agree with Benny, get a BMW diesel. Failing that a Mercedes diesel. Get a decent large sized engine, in whatever style car you want.

You then get the styling, spec, performance and great mpg.

A chipped 320D will give over 200 bhp and high 60s on a run. A very comfortable all rounder if you get one that is specced up with sat Nav, leather, a upgraded stereo.

can you please define economy?

How many miles in one fuelling under urban or highway conditions?

A post 07/08 BMW 320D can get upwards of 650-700 miles (over 1000kms) on a tank full with decent performance on tap.

I can verify that, we had an E92 MSport 320d for 3 years and it was a brilliant car, the MSport suspension on the E92 is the perfect blend of sportiness and comfort. Great seats if you get one with fully electric sports seats, and if driven frugally can easily do 600 miles plus to a tank of fuel.

The E92 is largely a ground up rework, it isn't just E90 saloon with 2 doors, its practically a entirely different car. My previous employer ran a fleet of BMWs and I had opportunity to drive a lot from 318ES spec touring cars all the way up to the 740d, build and materials quality on the E92 is certainly a step up from the E90.

You wouldn't be dissapointed with performance either, ours was an auto and was very quick when it needed to be, despite on paper weight a power advantages, the tuned 147 GTA I had at the same time probably wasn't any quicker point to point.

Some do, but I've not yet had, touch wood, any major problems with any of mine. The wife's 04 320D touring is now on 205k and still going strong.

Regarding economic fuel consumption. It depends on:
1. What car you are looking to buy and if it is the 1 series, 3 series, 5 series, X5 etc.
2. Age of the car you are looking to buy

An X5 and a 1 series with the same engine will have different MPG's.
A brand new X5 with the same size engine as a 5year old X5 will have different consumption. The cars have got more and more fuel efficient.

The fact is that for the past 8 or so years BMW have been making very good powerful diesel engines, that they have been putting in cars with their "M" styling. It does not mean that they are the "M Sport" series, but they have the styling and suspension.

Have a think about your budget and see what BMW you can afford for the money and I'm sure people will then give you some more precise views.
